What is a public beta launch?

“Beta” is a development term that refers to a testing period for a new software or product. A public beta is a testing period that is open to the public. The StoryCorps app and are in public beta.

Where do I get the app?

Follow the link on the front of the page to either the iTunes store (Apple users) or the Google Play store (Android users) to download the app to your mobile device.

How is this different from a traditional StoryCorps interview?

Traditionally, StoryCorps interviews have been conducted in booths with the presence of a facilitator. For interviews recorded on the app, your phone serves as a digital facilitator that will guide you through the process of preparation, recording, and archiving your conversation.

How do I prepare an interview?

We recommend that you use the question generator in the app to plan your interview. The generator contains great questions for a variety of participants, and also allows you to write your own.

I don’t have any stories to tell.

At StoryCorps we believe that every life matters and everyone has a story to tell. Take a look at our question generator to get started, or browse some other interviews to get inspired.

Is there a maximum/minimum length that my recording must be to be accepted to

No, there is not a maximum or minimum length for sharing. However, we find that it takes about 15 minutes for the storyteller to become comfortable, and for the conversation to really begin to flow. You can choose our preset options of 15, 30, or 40 minutes, or you can decide as you go. The app will automatically stop recording after 45 minutes.

Can I record an interview in a language other than English?

Yes, you can record your interview in any language you choose.

How many participants can there be in each interview? Is there a minimum or maximum?

The StoryCorps model is a conversation between two people. We find that the best conversations, and the best audio quality, are achieved when it’s simply two people sharing a conversation.

Do I have to share my interview?

No. After recording your interview, you have an option to keep it local on your device or to upload it to the platform. Interviews shared to the platform during the first year after launch will be archived at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.

Are all the interviews archived at the Library of Congress?

What fields are required to share my interview?

You will need an audio file, an interview title, and a photo to upload your conversation to the platform.

What are keywords?

Keywords are optional terms that you can attach to your interview before sharing it. They help improve the search features of the archive and allow other users to find stories about topics of interest. Keywords should describe the topics in your recording, and we recommend between 3-10 keywords per file. You can also use keywords to search for stories from other users about topics of interest to you.

After I publish my recording, how do my friends and family access it?

Please encourage your friends and family to download the StoryCorps app, or visit and register for an account. Then they’ll be able to listen to your recording on their devices.

Are there different privacy options? For example, can I choose to share my audio only with my contacts, no one else?

You have the choice to publish and share your interview with the community of users of the app, or to simply save the interview locally on your phone. Currently, there is not a way to share your interview with a select set of people.

I changed my mind after I published my interview and I don’t want it to be public. Can I delete it?

Yes, go to “My Interviews,” click on the icon at the bottom right of the interview that you’d like to delete, and then click on “Delete Full Interview.” Please note that although we will remove the recording from the site, we cannot ensure that any third parties will delete the file.
