[00:03] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: Hello. My name is Ann Smith. I'm 55 years old. Today is November 3, 2023, and we are here in Mobile, Alabama. And I'm with my friend, Ann Pearl Brantley. We've been friends for a long time. So, Ann you want to tell us who you are?
[00:30] ANN SMITH: My name is Ann
[00:32] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: And how old are you? You don't want to tell us? Okay. That's okay. Do you know what today's date is?
[00:38] ANN SMITH: What?
[00:40] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: November 3, 2023.
[00:44] ANN SMITH: Well, yeah, well, first I get that.
[00:49] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: And you know where we are? Do you know what city we're in? Mobile. Yeah. And who am I. Who are you with today? You're with your friend Ann. Yeah. Yeah. All right. Do you want to tell me what you like best about living at first light community? Would that be a good place to start? You want to tell me about it?
[01:23] ANN SMITH: Yeah.
[01:24] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: Can you talk into the microphone so that she can hear you?
[01:27] ANN SMITH: No.
[01:28] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: No? You don't want to? Okay. Well, I know one thing that you love to do that might. Might help you kind of relax a little bit. Do you want to sing a song with me?
[01:40] ANN SMITH: Well, no.
[01:41] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: No. Well, when. When I first knew you, I was eleven years old when we first met. And my dad was on the board back then, so we would always go to events and things. And what I remember the most about you, Ann Pearl, is you were always smiling and singing and dancing, and you loved to sing and dance, and you loved it when everybody was all together. And so what I've always known about you is that you really enjoy singing and just having a good time. So maybe that would be a way to kind of open up. You want to sing this little bite of mine? You love that song.
[02:29] ANN SMITH: Look, I'm going to. I'm gonna use it.
[02:53] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: I love it when you sing. That song makes me so happy. It's my favorite song that you sing. Yeah, it's a really. That's such a special song. That song always makes me think of you. Yeah. Well, do you want it? What do you like to eat? I know sometimes you love. You're always excited about mealtime. What's your favorite thing to eat?
[03:15] ANN SMITH: I love all. Mmm.
[03:26] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: Gosh, I know you like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
[03:30] ANN SMITH: Peanut butter, summer. And, you know.
[03:42] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: Crackers. Yeah. I know you always like dessert, too. Do you like chocolate?
[03:50] ANN SMITH: Chocolate?
[03:51] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: Chocolate.
[03:52] ANN SMITH: Mm hmm.
[03:53] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: Yeah. So one thing we like to do together is we like to visit on the porch at your house, don't we? You like to sit on the swing and on the porch, and usually we. I usually bring something sweet. Huh? Last time I brought. Do you remember what I brought last week for you to eat? Do you remember a pie? Yeah, an apple pie. Was it good? Yeah. And every time I go to visit Ann she gives me something that she made. So this time she gave me a beautiful tree that she had painted for me to decorate. When it comes time for Christmas, it's a Christmas tree that she painted. And I have lots of artwork that Annie's. Annie's always loved to do artwork. Do you want to tell us about some of the art projects you like to do? That's something you've always enjoyed. You don't want to tell us about it? No. Well, you like to paint. Yeah. And I know that for the marathon, you know, they always make canvases to give to all the runners. And you've helped with that. Do you remember doing that? Is there a certain part of that that you like? You like gluing the paper on the canvas? Yeah. What else do you like about it? Like just being with your friends at the AC. We call the activity center the AC. And you like being there a lot. That's always your favorite place. It's been kind of hard since COVID huh? We don't get to do the same things, so that's been hard on our community, hasn't it? Yeah. But one thing that we did together during COVID that I thought was so much fun, we facetimed all the time. Do you remember that? We would always have FaceTime phone calls. And sometimes we'd put my dog on there. Do you remember my dog's name? But Willie. Willie Nelson. You remember? You'd always want to talk to Willie Nelson. Yeah. And sometimes I'd take a walk down to the water and facetime you down there. And he always likes seeing the bay. Yeah. What else?
[06:13] ANN SMITH: How fun. Mar goall how fun.
[06:16] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: Mar goall you like Mardi Gras? Yeah.
[06:20] ANN SMITH: Well, girl. Yeah. Our bead.
[06:24] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: Get the beads. Yeah. What else?
[06:28] ANN SMITH: Me pie.
[06:30] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: Moon pies. Yeah.
[06:32] ANN SMITH: And little cup.
[06:39] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: Little cups. Yeah. They always throw those, huh?
[06:43] ANN SMITH: Well, good mug.
[06:46] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: You like the floats? Do you yell, throw me something, mister?
[06:51] ANN SMITH: Yeah, I do.
[06:53] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: And do they throw you stuff? Yeah. Yeah. Do you like, where do you like to stand? Do you like to be in the crowd or you like to kind of stand back from the crowd?
[07:03] ANN SMITH: Stand back.
[07:04] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: I like to stand back, too. I don't like to be up close. I like to stand back and watch it. I love all the lights and the colors. You like that, too? Yeah. Mardi gras a fun time here, isn't it? Yeah. Do you do you all walk to the parade?
[07:20] ANN SMITH: Yeah.
[07:20] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: Yeah. That's nice. You live close enough where you can walk and see the parade. That's. That's really special. That's something that you can do. Yeah. Do you want to tell me a little bit about your sister that lives at first light too?
[07:38] ANN SMITH: I got one city because she's a bad mo.
[07:43] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: She's so sweet.
[07:45] ANN SMITH: Real sweet.
[07:46] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: She's a sweetheart. What's her name?
[07:49] ANN SMITH: Barbara Jean.
[07:50] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: Barbara Jean, yeah. Yeah. And she's a sweetheart, huh? She is.
[07:56] ANN SMITH: You're my best sister.
[07:58] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: She's your best sister. She sure is. And so she lives in a house with your good friend Lily Belle. Lily Belle, that's right. Yeah. Claude. Claude, yeah. And Mark lives there, right?
[08:18] ANN SMITH: Yeah.
[08:19] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: Yeah. Yeah. So it's so nice that you all. You get to see each other and you go visit. Do you go visit Barbara Jean at.
[08:31] ANN SMITH: Her house by the year?
[08:35] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: Yeah. Yeah. Who's older, you or Barbara Jean?
[08:41] ANN SMITH: I bet old ish.
[08:44] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: You're the oldest, are you?
[08:48] ANN SMITH: You are my sister. I must have self beautiful come by you. We won't go borrow. I tell my sister. No, do not. I get up, I go both. Yeah. I'm going to tell you. Bow.

[12:01] ANN SMITH: Mm hmm.
[12:02] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: Yeah. And then you like to watch golf on tv, don't you? I think that's so interesting that you like to watch golf. Golf makes me sleepy. So when you're watching golf, do you fall asleep or do you stay awake.

Yeah. Yeah. That's so special that you. You really always tell people that you love them. That means a lot. Some people don't do that, do they? But it means a lot that you're always so loving. You say, I love you. You're my sweetheart. Where you been? You always say that, huh? Where you been?
[22:24] ANN SMITH: Oh, fun. I get to ball you a day.
[22:30] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: What did you do today?

[24:04] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: Oh, you want to sit down so she doesn't fall down. Was she trying to run where she shouldn't run?
[24:10] ANN SMITH: No.
[24:19] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: Okay.
[24:21] ANN SMITH: Sitting on the knee, she said, I did the fall. Oh, God. I catch my head like that.
[24:31] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: You're gonna catch her if she fell down? Yeah, the fall, yeah. That's so sweet of you to care about her and not want her to get hurt, huh?
[24:41] ANN SMITH: No.
[24:43] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: You didn't want her to get hurt? Yeah. Yeah. Um hmm. What are you grateful for in your life?

[25:29] ANN SMITH: Yeah.
[25:30] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: Sara and Janetta. Yeah. Val.
[25:41] ANN SMITH: Mm hmm.
[25:42] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: Yeah. Val's always making fun stuff at the AC, isn't she? Do you have a favorite project you like to work on?
[25:51] ANN SMITH: Mm mm.
[25:52] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: No. You haven't been making any art. I bet you're gonna make some Christmas art, aren't you? Some decorations.
[26:01] ANN SMITH: Yeah.
[26:02] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: Yeah. What about Halloween? I haven't heard about Halloween. Did you have fun?

[26:22] ANN SMITH: Do you remember Minnie Mouse?
[26:24] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: Minnie Mouse? Yeah. You had on that really fun headband. Do you remember what the headband looked like? It had. We played with it before Halloween. It had sequins on it and a red. Does it have a red bow? I can't remember. Was it a red bow?

Looked really pretty on you. You wore the red skirt with the white polka dots. I saw a picture and a red sweater. Did you wear the hands or you didn't like the hands you had before Halloween? I saw your costume and you had big Minnie Mouse hands. Did you wear them?
[27:33] ANN SMITH: Mm hmm.

[27:41] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: Yeah. Yeah. Is there anything else you want to talk about?
[27:54] ANN SMITH: No.
[27:55] ANN [NO NAME GIVEN]: No. You've had enough. Sometimes when you're done, you're just like, I'm done now. Is that how you feel now? Sometimes when we're at the house, huh? And we're on the porch and you've decided you've had enough, you just, like, get up and go inside, huh? Is that how you feel? Well, that's okay. We can. We can say that we're finished. I want to thank you for coming down here with me and spending this time with me. I always love being with you, and it means a lot to me to get to do this with you. So thank you for.
