Description

Ann interviewed Dad extensively - some reminiscences included Uncle Jimmy - Dad revealed just how deeply he was affected - the tremendous emotional toll that he carried privately.
Witnessing Dad's unwavering devotion to Uncle Jimmy & to Gram were experiential lessons in caring and compassion. Ann states as much but it's clear to this day that Dad doesn't realize the positive impact his actions had on us as kids.
Kath recalls Uncle Jim’s occasional steps back in time, reciting from the bible on the stoop at 171-36 Courtney Avenue. Then there was the time that Gram sat Marg & Kath down to discuss Mom and Dad’s exceptional qualities and impress upon us the importance of their careers in helping others - she wanted us to fully comprehend and appreciate how much they gave of themselves in their professional lives, with just as much devotion.
Mom and Dad discuss their school days, comparing the sweet order of Irish nuns from Mom's elementary days to the stricter order during her Dominican days. Clearly, the sub-intellectual curriculum (ho-hum) had her beyond bored, with her inner Elaine screaming "Get me outta here!" No doubt Mom would've loved HS given a liberal arts curriculum! Gram was not given the education that she deserved, needing to help her mother. It was wonderful watch Gram’s voice brighten, her face light up and she'd become joyful as she expressed pride in attending Hunter College High, always making note of its proper name, and happy to share Ever civic-minded, Gram taught Ann how a bill becomes a law! (and she didn't need snazzy lyrics or clever cartoons!)
