JN recalls joining the National Guard at age 15, being kicked out for being a minor, later joining the United States Army, and being deployed in the Korean War.
JN describes the bunkers at the front lines in the Korean War, and recalls the different types of food they ate there.
JN speaks about engaging with the enemy, and tells stories from battle.
JN remembers more time in Korea, and recalls some of his friends being killed in a battle at Mount Baldy (Hill 266). JN recalls being wounded in by mortar shrapnel in this battle.
JN speaks about being treated in various hospitals before having surgery in Tokyo, Japan, and tells the story of calling his mother and coming home.
NF asks JN about "downtime" during the war; JN says there was not anything to do, and remembers having Thanksgiving dinner in a tent. JN remembers coming home and getting married before being sent to train others on base.
JN recalls being sent to Washington state after the closure of Camp San Luis Obispo, and speaks about surgery to have the last piece of shrapnel removed from his neck.
JN speaks of his likes and dislikes from the military and expresses his enjoyment of guns. JN tells a story of getting other infantrymen sick from improperly washing the dishes on kitchen duty.
JN shares his family history of service and recalls requesting combat duty in Korea. JN mentions his children never enlisting or being drafted. JN speaks about the nature of the world and war being constant.
