Former members of Congress Val Demings and Ted Yoho

When Democrat Val Demings served in congress alongside Republican Ted Yoho, the pair did not get along.

Demings and Yoho recently sat down for a StoryCorps One Small Step conversation, and discussed growing up in Florida and how faith has shaped their political views over the years.

“It gives you and me the opportunity to show that it's hard to hate up close,” Demings said.

Yoho said while in Congress, he was one of the most conservative members.

"Yet I was one of the most bipartisan, because I knew that you can't do this alone," Yoho said.

During the conversation, the pair joked about running for president together.
