On November 21, 2017, at Lehman College - Adult Learning Center, Ismett Vasquez and Lurinarda Gonzalez talked about Ismett's childhood and what it was like growing up in the South Bronx. Ismett shares a happy and a sad memory about her family, and how her childhood wasn't so great, and how she spent a lot of time in the streets. Ismett talks about how she followed her best friend and cut school, and they would "go in one door and out the other. I couldn't sit down in class. I was too busy hanging out." Ismett talked about being in kindergarten and not liking school, especially when teachers were physically abusive. She talked about having a favorite teacher who taught her to read and write and how Ismett named her daughter, Susanna, after this teacher. She also shared that her sons are all big jokers, especially the next to the youngest one.
