Description

Is it a good time to be a climate scientist? Yes, says Phil Mote, Director Oregon Climate Change Research Institute at Oregon State University. Predictions over the past 40 years are coming true and while some look at that with an alarmist perspective, there’s also a growing assurance in the community that their collective understanding is solid and getting better. But, the challenge of communicating complex environmental messages to an increasingly overwhelmed public is still one of the most vexing parts of the job. Over 3 decades working as a scientist and advocate, Phil has developed some techniques for his presentations, including the clever “5 things I wish weren’t true” framework. It’s all part of his approach as a practitioner of “science translation”. (Recorded 11 December 2018)
