Description

Kathy Cashman, professor at the University of Bristol, worked on the 1980 eruption at Mount St. Helen’s in Washington, one of the first monitored volcanic eruptions in the world (“it was a ‘who’s who’ of volcanology and geology”). Thanks to that experience, she developed “Red Rock Fever” and had studied volcanos on all seven continents throughout her career. It turns out when she told her mother she wouldn’t do anything dangerous with her life, she lied. She’s a highly decorated scientist – elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2016 – yet remains a modest interview. She discusses her love of field work with her appreciation of new data, hoping for an even marriage of both sides. (Recorded 10 December 2018)
