Katina (K) and Qian (Q) share why they wanted to participate in today's interview.
Q reflects on her experience in the United States as an immigrant from China. Q says she feels a lot of gratitude and also a sense of loss. She adds that it's hard to feel like she can put down roots.
K talks about how her family has influenced her. K says community and helping others has always been a part of her family culture.
Q says her mother has been the most influential person in her life. She says growing up her mother was her best-friend and a career inspiration.
K says her mother has also been the most influential person in her life. K says her mother supported her and pushed her to excel. She says there is an abundance of teachers in her family and later in her career she switched fields to teaching.
Q speaks about how her mother's career as an engineer influenced her own career choice. Q notes that she studied early childhood education and development.
Q explains how she came to work on her novel about the immigrant experience and the implications of a deteriorating US-China relationship.
K shares with Q her thoughts on the relationship between government and people and the importance of separating the two because governments do not always represent the people.
K talks about her experience as a woman of African descent in the United States. K says there are freedoms afforded to immigrants that have not been afforded to African Americans.
Q shares with K her understanding of the African American experience.
Q says there are limited opportunities for her and her friends to interact with African Americans. Q says she would love to have the opportunity for more social interactions and will try harder in the future to step out of her social circle.
K describes the social pressures that she feels because of the many forces that are always present. K says learning how to live in a world that is hostile towards you is such a part of the African American experience in America.
Q describes her experience learning about U.S. society and justice as an immigrant.
