Lee McDaniel says he was born in Cotton Plant, Arkansas in 1943. He says his family owned approximately 65 acres of farm land and grew their own food.
Lee says he is the youngest of 8 siblings. He talks about his skin tone being darker than that of his older siblings and the potential this caused for fights.
Lee describes himself as an obedient child. He says you did not lie or steal and talks about how his parents approached discipline.
Lee says his favorite subject in school was math. He says he did not understand why science was being pushed so hard. He remembers feeling like those things should be left up to God.
Lee talks about picking/delivering strawberries and learning to drive a truck before he could see over the steering wheel.
Lee talks about finishing high school in Los Angeles, California. He says integration of the school he attended in Cotton Plant, Arkansas, prompted his parents to make this decision.
Lee says his family was fortunate to own land. He remembers his mother no longer having to work in the fields. Lee says he always felt safe at home.
Lee remembers being selected to attend a youth leadership conference at Archie Moore’s camp in California. He says the other students in attendance were interested to hear about all of the chores he used to do on the farm in Arkansas.
Lee talks about graduating from high school and becoming a Freemason. He says these are the two things his father wanted him to accomplish.
