Participants talk about why they wanted to participate in One Small Step.
Justin Rosenkrantz (JR) shares that he was most struck in Pamela Howard (PH)'s bio that she grew up with "no shortage of love." PH remembers having supper as a family every night. She shares a story about her mother serving bread and water to company and being mocked in school.
PH shares she was struck in JR's bio about the trauma and the mental health challenges he witnessed with his brother, who served in the United States Army as she did.
JR and PH share how their religious beliefs shape their political views, and their shared belief that everyone deserves respect. They discuss racial prejudice.
JR describes feeling excluded from DEI groups at his work as a white male, and why he feels it’s more divisive than unifying.
PH tells a story about her child experiencing racism at an elementary school age. She talks about the historical imbalance between races.
JR reflects on what he’s witnessed and his discomfort with grouping folks as if they’ve all had similar experiences, Black or White. He talks about diversity.
PH reflects on a time when she felt most “seen;” at first she thinks about her time in the military. JR shares that he feels most seen when someone asks about his feelings and tries to understand who he is.
Participants talk about what they’ll take away from this experience, and share that they find much in common between them.
