Scott Gomer (60) says he was watching a public service announcement for the Air Force when he decided to go to a recruiter's office and join up. Scott says he was in the media division with his third assignment taking him to Spain.
Maria Gomer (56) remembers listening to Air Force radio in Spain. She says she worked at a bar/restaurant that Scott would often frequent.
Maria says her first time leaving Spain was after she and Scott were married. She says they had a daughter and were stationed in Germany.
Scott says his first deployment came in the early 1990's during the Gulf War. Maria remembers being pregnant with their 2nd child during this time and says it was a difficult pregnancy.
Scott and Maria talk about being stationed in San Antonio, Texas, as well as, Seoul, South Korea. Scott says they were in Korea when the attacks on September 11th took place. He says all of the military families living off base, including his own, were rounded up and brought on base for security reasons.
Scott talks about how each overseas military base is a slice of America, with bowling alleys, movie theaters, and pizza parlors.
Scott talks about being out of the service now and living in Madison, Wisconsin.
Scott talks about missing the sense of community that the military provides. He says he does not miss the uniform or having his weight monitored.
Scott says the best catch phrase from his time in the service is "Aim High."
