Douglas C. Kimmel (69) talks with his old friend William J. Kapla (69) about his career in Psychology and his efforts to expand the field to include the LGBT community.

D and W met in a psychology class at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
D met his partner of many years, Ron, while living in Chicago. They had a commitment ceremony in Boulder and a wedding in 1969.
Homosexuality was still considered an illness by the American Psychological Association and this was changed by the efforts of W and others. D was also interested in Gerontology and the effects of aging on gay men and women.
D was a founder of SAGE (Service and Advocacy for Gay Elders, later renamed Service and Advocacy for GLBT Elders).
After making a home in Maine, D and his partner Ron resumed their careers in NYC.
D is proud of the part he had in bringing about changes for the LGBT community.
