C's father was a chaplain in the military and the family moved around the country as his father was transferred. His father later became a chaplain in the Veterans Administration Hospitals.
While his father was stationed at a VA mental hospital, C interacted with many of the patients and found them non-threatening and enjoyable to spend his time with.
C's family moves to Southern California where his father has been able to transfer to another hospital.
C tells about his driving trip across the US with his mother.
In 1958 when he was ready for college C couldn't afford an Eastern campus but decided to attend UC, Berkeley. He met his future wife after a year and a half.
C went to UCLA and then took an internship in Boston where he decided to go into psychiatry. He felt that his earlier exposure to mental patients drew him into the field.
C did his residency in the Bay Area during the 1967 Summer of Love.
