Description
Guest speaker, Sheri Bishop M.Ed., at the Sarasota University Colloquium. Sheri, who currently works as AMI/USA Human Rights and Social Justice Advisor, discussed how American history is deeply connected to the experiences and history of people of color. Our American history is a composite of rich, triumphant, and tragic stories experienced from many perspectives. Though this reality is grounded in academic evidence, Sheri discussed that the way mainstream American history is currently taught supports biases and racism. Her primary emphasis during the discussion was how to embed American history lessons within the Montessori curriculum that includes and uplifts the past and current stories, accomplishments, and contributions of African Americans. Furthermore, Ms. Bishop discussed how to use the emancipatory approach to acquiring human knowledge in Montessori settings to teach American history with integrity and truth.Participants
