00:02 Hello, my name is Shelby Bennett and this is my recording for the Story Courts Project. Today's date is July 16, 2022. Today I will be interviewing my mom, Crystal Bennett. She is 44 years old and I am 16. Today we will be addressing her childhood and how her parents affected her development by abusing the use of alcohol and drugs. Continuing with my questions, do you ever resent your parents for their choices?
00:43 I do resent them for their choices as far as being responsible parents, but it's not a hatred resentment. It's more of an emotional resentment.
00:56 Alrighty. How did it make you feel when your parents used these substances.
01:03 Undervalued as a child because they chose to resort in things they enjoyed versus applying themselves to their children? They didn't necessarily neglect us, but the things they did did not display a good example for us.
01:27 Alrighty. How often did they use these substances around you?
01:32 Alcohol was daily. As far as the marijuana and drugs, I never actually seen it with my mother, but she would hide the trays under tables and cabinets and things. My biological father did it all the time, but he divorced my mom when she was pregnant, so I never really was raised with him and he never come around.
01:55 All right. Do you think with their use of these substances around you that it had any physical effects on you?
02:02 Physical? Yes, due to the fact I had asthma later in life and I've never smoked or did anything as far as emotional effects. It kind of made me kind of a prune and boring to be around because I don't drink or do drugs or anything. And I do get criticized for that by even my own husband and friends because I don't do anything like that.
02:28 Alrighty. And do you think it impacted your development growing up?
02:36 As far as growing up, yes, because it made me kind of second guess people and not understand why people would do that and place their emotions and financial being into substances that could cause harm to others and never think about the consequences.
02:57 All right, thank you.
