The Fight For Freedom

Description

The dictionary defines a role model as a person whose behavior, example, or success is emulated by others. On that basis, Markiel Daniel, my grandfather, is my role model.
When Markiel Daniel was a citizen of the former Soviet Union, he was the chief editor of a major newspaper in Tajikistan. Even with this high nobility and honor, he still didn’t have the freedom to practice his own religion and to exercise any right of free speech. This being the case, Markiel decided it would be best to leave the country and start a new life in Israel. After requesting to leave the country in 1970, he became a refusenik, a Russian Jew who didn’t have permission to leave the nation.
