00:03 Hi everyone. This is Serena and her best friend Cassie. Today, Cassie is going to ask me some questions about me, about studying abroad, my thoughts and my expectations.

00:18 Yes, as your friend, I want to ask that what motivated you to choose to study abroad in a different country?

00:29 For me, studying abroad provides an opportunity to broaden my understanding of different cultures, traditions and ways of thinking. I went to Canada as an exchange student when I was in grade seven. The experience really left me a great impression. I got to know that there were many differences between country and country. I also got to know how their lifestyles were and their outlooks of work. I stayed there for two months and it is an exposure to new perspectives and diverse cultures. Moreover, studying in a foreign country often means gaining access to high quality educational institutions, specialized programs and research opportunities that may not be available in my home country. It offers exposure to different academic resources and career prospects. What's more, immersing myself in a foreign country provides a unique chance to develop language skills. Being surrounded by native speakers and using the language in day to day activities can enhance linguistic abilities which can be valuable for future career prospects.

02:03 Yes, I know that when it comes to go to a foreign country, we may feel a bit of nervous because our parents don't go abroad with us. I think it also relates to independence and risk. Fearless?

02:21 Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Living independently in a foreign country requires adapting to a new environment, managing finances, navigating unfamiliar systems and solving problems. These experiences can foster my personal growth, independence and resilience. It can challenge me to step out of my comfort zones and become more adaptable, flexible and self reliant. It promotes personal development, independence and self confidence.

03:09 What are your preparations for going abroad recently?

03:15 It's very simple because I am now learning to cook delicious food. I think it is very important to eat well in an unfamiliar country. So I'm trying to cook some local food to adapt to the life there. Only when you are full can you have the strength to work, isn't it?

03:46 Yes. Yes, I agree with you. Yes, I agree with you. Expect this. What are your expectations and concerns about living and living and studying in a foreign country for two years?

04:12 I'm also a bit of concerned about language barrier. Actually, I'm not so nervous about teachers and students in school because I think they have the patience to listen to me. But when I go to the society, I'm afraid I will make the mistake and repeat. Pardon, Pardon. Again, again. It is really awkward to me. Also, being away from family and familiar surroundings for an extended period can trigger my homesickness. I'm sure that I will miss you and my friends family when I am in America.

04:58 I will miss you too.

05:00 Okay, I will have Another concern is health and safety. Safety is an important consideration when living in a foreign country. Individuals may have concerns about healthcare access, personal safety and navigating unfamiliar surroundings. I'm very afraid that in America people can take guns with them.

05:39 Oh my God, that's true. It is better to stay at the dormitory at night and please avoid going out alone. I think. Take care of yourself.

05:53 Yeah, yeah, sure. I will. Thank you.

06:00 I am also curious about that. Are there specific goals you would like to achieve during your time abroad? How do you plan to walk towards them?

06:16 Of course I want to learn Education minor in Salem. I'm deeply interested in education and I want to be an educator who contributes to the growth and development of students. I believe that by studying education in the United States, I will gain in depth theoretical and practical knowledge of education, understand the latest educational trends and methods, and develop my teaching ability in a cross cultural and diverse educational environment.

07:03 That's cool. How do you anticipate this experience, shaping your perspective on global issues and intellectual understanding? What strategies do you plan to use to make meaningful connections with local students and immerse yourself in the local community?

07:32 Living in a foreign country allows me to experience daily life and engage with individuals from different cultural backgrounds. By observing and participating in local customs, traditions, and celebrations, I can gain a deeper understanding of the local culture and its significance. This immersion can broaden my perspectives and challenge my any stereotypes I may have had. Engaging with local students is an excellent way to form meaningful connections and share experiences, participate activities, join clubs or student organizations and collaborate on academic projects. Engaging in regular conversations with local students will provide insights into their values, educational experiences and aspirations, fostering intercultural understanding. I will definitely join their dance club and some sports activities. I am extrovert and I am excited to socialize with people. Engaging in community service or volunteering can be a rewarding way to connect with the local community. Look for opportunities to contribute your skills and knowledge to local organizations or initiatives. By working alongside local community members, I can gain insight into their challenges and the way they address global issues within their community and also attend cultural activities, festivals, and events to learn more about the local traditions, art, music, and cuisine. Participating in these activities not only exposes to new experiences, but also provides opportunities to interact with locals who share a common interest. This can be a great conversation starter and a way to forge connections throughout my time abroad. Reflect on experiences, biases and assumptions, engage in self awareness practices to critically examine my own cultural lenses and broaden my perspectives, seek opportunities to have open and respectful discussions about global issues with local students and community members. And I think I need to be open minded, curious and respectful of different perspectives and approach experiences with sincere willingness to learn and understand. By actively engaging in local activities, forging relationships, and maintaining an open attitude, I can have an experience that shapes my perspective on global issues and intercultural understanding.

11:33 Okay, I have a general idea about that. So in the end, can you tell me some expectations for going abroad? You can reflect on your interview or anything you wish to tell yourself.

11:56 It's important to be aware that I may experience cultural shock when adjusting to a new country and culture. I have to expect to encounter differences in social norms, communication styles and daily routines and I need to give time to adjust and be patient with the process. I think I need to build a support network. While it is important to be independent, I think it's equally important to build a support network. I need to expect to meet other international students and seek out opportunities to connect with local students and international community. These connections can provide invaluable support, friendship and a sense of belonging. Also, I may have academic challenges. Going abroad may come with academic challenges such as different teaching styles, expectations or grading systems. I need to embrace these challenges as opportunities for growth and adaptations. I also need to seek support from professors, mentors and fellow students and be proactive in managing my studies. Going abroad has the potential to profoundly change my perspective, broaden my horizons, and foster personal growth. It's important to have realistic expectations of the impact it can have on my personal development. So just embrace the journey and reflect on myself and allow myself to evolve as I navigate the challenges and joys of being abroad. I am very excited to go to Salem and have a great time there and I hope that everything will be fine. And thank you for interviewing me today.

14:44 That's okay. I will be glad if you have great memory there. I will see you two. Two years later.

14:56 I think we can see these two months because I still have some vacation, isn't it? Okay.

15:05 Okay.

15:07 See you. See you.

15:13 Okay, it seems that we haven't finished 30 minutes talk yet so let me ask some questions more.

15:24 Sure. I'm glad to see you again.

15:29 Why did you choose to study abroad and what is your study plan?

15:43 I choose to go to Salem State because it has excellent reputation and teaching resources in the field of education. I believe that the university will provide me with excellent education courses, rich practical opportunities and first class education. Teachers and Guidance Resources I hope to benefit from the University's learning environment and professional support and explore the field of education in depth and lay a solid foundation for my future career in education. I plan to study education minor in the United States. I am deeply interested in education and want to be an educator who contributes to the growth and development of students. I believe that by studying education in the United States, I will gain in depth theoretical and practical knowledge of education, understand the latest educational trends and methods, and develop my teaching ability in a cross cultural and diverse education environment. And here are some examples of core courses for education majors that I plan to take at the university. The first one is Educational Principles and Practices, second is Educational Psychology, the third one is Educational Technology and Innovation, and the fourth is Educational Policy and Leadership. These core courses will provide me with a broad range of educational knowledge and practical practical opportunities to help me develop as a talented and responsible educator. After completing my studies, I hope to become a visionary and influential educator. In the long run, I intend to enhance my professional skills in education and leadership through further study and practice.

19:28 Wow. I think you can gain a lot from America. Besides, what's your plan? After two years study.

19:43 I will come back to Nanjing Normal University and then finish my last year in Nanjing. As for graduate students, I think I will go abroad to study and study in Salem can prepare me for adapting to life abroad. Some foreign universities have excellent research reputation and resources in specific fields. These schools may have advanced facilities, library resources, research opportunities, and so on that can provide a wider range of academic and research resources which in turn help to expand the field of research and deepen academic knowledge. Studying abroad as a graduate can provide an international learning environment and experience compared to studying at home. Studying abroad allows me to be exposed to a multicultural environment, interacting and learning with students from all over the world. This cross cultural experience can help me develop global awareness, broaden my horizons, and develop the ability to communicate and collaborate across cultures. Foreign degrees, academic experience, and international exchange experiences can often have a positive impact on career development. In some professional fields, a foreign degree may be more internationally recognized and valued. In addition, while studying abroad you have the opportunity to make international contacts, learn about the job market and opportunities in different countries, and prepare for future job hunting or entry into international organizations. Choosing to pursue graduate studies abroad can provide better language learning opportunities. If you choose to go to a country where the language is different from your own, you have more opportunities to immerse yourself in that language environment and improve my language skills. In addition, you will be able to better understand and experience the culture of other countries, increasing cross cultural communication and adaptability.

23:23 Are you prepared to leave your family and friends behind? How do you plan to stay connected and supported while studying abroad?

23:36 Yes, I am prepared to leave my family and friends behind as I embark on this study abroad journey. It is definitely a bittersweet, bittersweet feeling as I will miss your presence and support. However, I am planning to stay connected connected with them through various means. Firstly, I will ensure regular communication via messaging, apps, video calls and social media platforms. This way I can stay updated with your lives and share my experiences abroad. Additionally, I will make an effort to schedule regular calls or virtual meetups with my loved ones to maintain a strong connection. I also plan to set aside time to write letters or send care packages to let them know I am thinking of them. Moreover, I intend to join international student associations or student clubs at my university. These platforms will not only allow me to meet fellow students from around the world, but also provide a supportive community where I can share experiences, seek advice and establish new friendships. Lastly, I will also keep my family and friends informed about my academic progress, activities and any challenges I may face. Their support and encouragement will continue to be invaluable during my time abroad. Overall, while leaving my family and friends is not easy, I am determined to stay connected with them and make the most of my study abroad experience while building new relationships and support systems. Thank you. That's all?

26:48 No thanks.
