Description

In today’s society people are celebrating LGBTQ people with parades and festivals, rather than spreading hatred towards them, but this wasn’t always the case. In November of 2018, 14 year old Sofia Brandon-Schwartz interviewed her father, Carlo Brandon to learn about the struggles of being a gay man in the 80s. This story includes the hardships his religion caused him, which is talked about in the fourth minute, along with the way society viewed gay people. Throughout his story, Sofia learns about his difficulties connecting with his family and friends, the lies he had to share with the world, and the process of finally accepting his true self. His story shares the heartbreaking journey of growing up in a world where Carlo was taught to hate himself and finally breaking through his shell to show the world who he really is. In his youth he was putting on a show for everyone around him, but today he is able to live freely without worrying about how people view him.
