John Friedrich (56) talks with his friend Bob Alpern (92) talks about two trips to Europe to protest the deployment of U.S. missiles in Europe, including a three day block of the Mutlangen Air Force Base in southern Germany. There, they has many visitors, including the novelist Gunther Grass. The theme of their action was "White Water Breaks the Stone," as they were taking a stand to make change that serves life and humankind.
Bob also talks of exploring ancient sites with his wife Carolyn around the world, including in Ireland, England, Corsica, Sicily, Sardinia, Malta and Crete.
Bob reflects on visiting the Mondragon Cooperative in the Basque Region of Spain.
Bob then talks about life on the West Coast since retiring 23 years prior, including weekly 5-10 mile hikes every Wednesday with his hiking group. Bob reflects on why he prefers living in the West, and also about the trip he and John did together down Highway 395, and to Yosemite National Park, which he hadn't visited since being stationed in Fort Ord in the 1940s.
