Description
Jacob Bleacher has spent a great deal of time preparing for Mars and the moon, even though he has never left the Earth’s orbit. The research scientist at Goddard Space Flight Center is currently on detail at NASA Headquarters as the chief exploration scientist for human exploration, meaning he gets to test Mars rovers and astronaut suits for weeks at a time in simulations in places like the desert of Arizona around Flagstaff. His work includes testing equipment to make sure it will work and be easy to use in lunar or Martian conditions, but much of his research is focused on lava tubes, caves which may serve as good protection from solar radiation for future Mars explorers.
