Stephen Running, an Emeritus Regent's Professor at the University of Montana, shares about his work with NASA studying the global ecosystem from space. Trying out a microscope at a young age ironically led him into a lifetime of looking at science on a much more macro scale. He says that President Ronald Reagan challenged satellite researchers to focus on something more ambitious than merely predicting Soviet wheat yields, and that helped move research toward a more global understanding of climate and the earth as a global system. Dr. Running has specialized in writing computer programs that interpret satellite data to track plants in their current context and calculate all photosynthesis happening on Earth.
