Description

Nearing the end of her career, Anne Douglass, at NASA Godard Space Flight Center, has provided the scientific community with a better understanding of the ozone layer that protects us all from ultraviolet radiation. Anne describes the energy that it takes to address the challenges associated with juggling a family and a successful career. Anne Douglas’s stratospheric ozone modeling gives the world a better understanding of how to address climate change and the hole in the ozone layer.

“The more you learn about data, the better you get at modeling, the more you can understand it.” Anne’s goal is to “reduce uncertainty and projection,” and manage the effects of climate change. “when you put exhaust in the stratosphere, it hangs out for a while.”

The consequences are still unknown. The ozone layer is thickening except in the tropics. The reasons why are also as yet unknown. Anne’s models are designed to “best manage the planet for all who live here.” Even with the challenges, Anne believes we have great potential to move things forward. Her wisdom will allow us to do so. (Recorded 13 December 2018)
