Ashley Hicks (19) and Katie Rea (19), both UVA Wise students, have a One Small Step conversation at the VPM office in Charlottesville, Virginia. Their conversation was recorded during Democracy360, the Karsh Institute of Democracy’s three-day biennial conference. Both students share experiences growing up in single-parent households. Ashley describes how losing her mother forced her to mature quickly, including helping herself and her younger sister navigate adolescence and womanhood. Katie shares that her father has been the most influential person in her life, but describes their disagreements on several social issues. They discuss abortion, polarization, and their personal ideology development.
