00:08 I am the gray age 16 today is March 26th, 2011 run Atlanta and me and my brother are interviewing Our Father.

00:25 My name is Landon Bray and I'm 14 and it's March 26th, and we're in Atlanta, Georgia interviewing.

00:34 My dad

00:38 And my name is a d boy. I'm 44 years old. Today is March 26th, 4 in Atlanta, Georgia, and I'm here with my sons and my husband Glenn. I'm doing the interview.

00:53 My name is Glenn Bray. I'm 51. Today is March 26th, 2011. We're in Atlanta Georgia, and I'm the father and husband.

01:05 Hello father how you think how you doing? I'm fine. Why don't you tell us about your family? Well, if my mom has arisen from Louisiana near Lake Charles that she grew up on the farm. She was a Cajun through and through what I understand Cajuns were originally from France and they got expelled from Europe and came through then Northeast of the United States and Canada called Acadia and then they migrated down to Louisiana. And that's where they started doing. Nothing in Cajun Country Cookin the good food and living the good life. My dad was from the Thomaston, Georgia area.

01:52 He was in the Air Force and he moved to Columbus to find work and he was a display man for Fort Benning at Fort Benning, Georgia. He is very artistic and that's how I got started doing the display work at Fort Benning.

02:08 My mom is pretty much a housewife until she started working in the food industry business and she worked at Ralston Towers here locally for 30 or 40 years since morning. I got one of my first jobs as a dishwasher so she helped me get the job but my parents met in New Orleans, Louisiana my day. I was at a department store where my mother work and from what I understand either. He deliberately stuck his leg out the Tripper or else she tripped accidentally, but other men at the department store.

02:46 My mother was probably the guiding influence in my life. She was a farm girl. She wrote horses and stuff in Louisiana and therefore she had a big work ethic and I think maybe that rubbed off some on me.

03:03 Other parts of my family. I've got four brothers and one sister and her brothers, but it's Tommy. He's now deceased Jeff and Ed and my sister is Patsy.

03:16 Now call Butch be call Butch be really that's probably only mate name other than me when I was a child I called me Tad tadpole and a little information on tadpoles when I was in the first grade they made us write down their names on the piece of paper and instead of writing a real name, which I didn't really know how to throw Tapo but I misspell pole and Isabel. Pol. So when the teacher got the paper she said who is tadpool, so I thought that was kind of funny and you have said something to the teachers that I was Ted Poe and then she said you must be laying Bryce and yes, that's my real name, but never mind my family calls me Tappo.

04:02 So you have any other questions?

04:05 What is your earliest memory? I guess I'm not earliest memories were.

04:16 Pulling up on the web. I think I can remember pulling up on that baby bed and seeing my mom that I'm not sure how old I was when I was doing that. I could have been the toddler sleeping in the baby because we had so many kids in the family. I can also remember one time when my dad my uncle had come home from a night of partying. I had a Casper bank and I remember I started wrestling in our living room in my Casper Bank fell off the table and broke nose. I was heartbroken, but that was one of my first memories and not sure how old I was probably guess. I was probably three or four years old.

04:55 Another thing when I was in the first grade, I had broken both of my arms falling out of a tree and I remember going to the first grade and riding your handwriting was a big deal back then and remember when I wrote the teacher pick up my paper and was getting onto the rest of the class telling rest of the class it

05:20 Had to had two broken arms and he could write just as well as some of the others in class. So I remember that night was one of the earliest memories nothing about me breaking my arms was it was ironic that my brother Tommy had broken both of his legs and he did that phone have a tree also, so it wasn't at the same time. He had broken both his legs. So probably three years before I broke both my arms, but I guess two broken lens in the family.

05:50 Anything else

05:52 Tell us about your friends. Oh my friends then I've had some childhood friends at her still my friends today, but I guess what I got to say today is that a lot of my friends pics of my childhood friends who are still my friends that day and plus my friends. I made in high school and college. We had a group of us that we called the Sons of fun and when we were in college and all these other fraternities would ask us to know pleasure fraternity enjoying then me and my friends wanted to do our own thing. So we just decided we'd stay the size of fun. So I had friends. I like the name some of their Wayne Marshall New Holland Elementary School Holland Ave. And since I have known from kindergarten Greg fridge and Joey lamb Berry Cosby Teri Elliott,

06:52 I got a friend named Mark giving we call him good E & E Whatley who must have her call him? Mr. Wylie now because he's a teacher and he taught at your school in the middle school. I just hit me who we call the hit-skip sending Jeff Cosby Jeff Kennedy and a friend named Steve forehand who we call Smash and he couldn't drink beer very well. He get pretty drunk after one or two beers. So we started calling him Smash Mouth has been reformed he hasn't drinking anything and probably 20-25 years. I'm sure good good Christian women have the song. I'd like to think of the sons of fun song besides. I've been sober since I don't know when you can trust the sons of fun. I'll never let you down cuz when it comes to having fun, you're number one in town when I was just

07:52 Baby, my mama told me son one day we're going to grow up to be a sense of fun. You can shut the sons of fun. I never LED you cuz when it comes to having fun, we are number one in town and we all put our hands together and go away is there closer to me than my real brothers are cuz me and my brothers were so different than AIDS.

08:22 Afterbay, your father noticed Brothers definitely old enough to be my father and the one closest to me in age is five years old or so, you know, we didn't we had a lot of times that you haven't read your some different age brackets, and so my friends were closer to me in a lot of ways and my brothers were but I still love my brother's their blood.

08:49 What are your views on religion?

08:52 Well, that's that's

08:56 Spot in my heart for religion, you know, I grew up as a Methodist. I used to walk down the street to go to a local church, st. Andrew's Methodist. I probably did that when I was seven eight years old and I just walk down there with no Rhyme or Reason. It just felt like I needed to go to church. So I walked there and Medicare name art when we had he lived in my neighborhood in this Brother David Boyett. That's how I got to start started playing baseball with them. And you know, we got to know the preacher real Wells name was Jim Jensen and I went to church throughout my childhood up until I was 17 18 years old and I stopped going as much but I've never lost know that place in my heart for God and Jesus. So I guess what I want to say is that became a geologist when I went to college and I had his issues with evolution vs.

09:56 So I came up with the term called Revolution which is sort of a belief in both creation and evolution and that's what I believe. I believe that God created man, and he also created Evolution and I don't know how I got here. The Bible doesn't really say other than the God created them from dust and I'd really like to know some details about it, but it's not any of their so

10:23 I don't really know what other the say then you don't believe in God, I believe in Jesus, but I also believe in a lot of principles of geology. So I'd like for both of you to be religious and believe in God, I think I'll explain to you how I felt about that, but just just keep that in mind and as you grow older, I think maybe you'll come closer to God and he woke up there and see where it takes us.

10:53 Hearts

10:54 They are what about the him request when I was going to st. Andrews a child that he's have a ham request every night that ass to the preacher would ask the congregation what teams are going to play in. My favor is always on request Christian Soldiers and I'd requested every Sunday. So it got to be where the preacher would ask for any requests and I raised my hand and got me all excited waving my hand in the air and he said we know we know and everybody would automatically turn to that page and started singing Under Christian Soldiers. So it's kind of a highlight of my life and I think when when I pass away, maybe they'll be a song about that have played at my funeral.

11:38 When you got to go to Burger King, that's right. The boy that said I'm at the church. We were kind of bored. I guess they were I guess a little better off than we were they used to take us to Burger King after Sunday service. And that is one of my earliest memories ever going out to eat. So it would go every Sunday after the service and I told her to do cheeseburgers ketchup only.

12:05 Did the sex of y'all and we never went without eating anything like that, but sometimes we have sugar water instead of Kool-Aid.

12:17 What are some of your favorite quotes?

12:20 Well being that we were talking about science. I think one of them that comes to mind is a bit of science distances one from God and a lot of Sciences brings one closer. I think that's Louis pastuer that go to bed. I'm not sure but it's been one of my favorites another one. I like is every problem is an opportunity in Disguise and reason I like that as you know, I've had a lot of problems in the life and trying to overcome those you think about things that you need to do to overcome that and one of the things is every problem is an opportunity in Disguise. You just have to think about it and work it in your head how you can work it out and making it an opportunity. So that's one and then another one is anticipation is worse than reality. And sometimes I have to give talks and get in front of an audience and then can I get stage fright, but it's always worked out when I think about the end.

13:20 Tyson is worse than the reality, you know you worry about stuff more than you need to and then what you do it works out. It's not that big a deal. So those are hope maybe you'll remember those as you grow older.

13:37 What can you tell us about your childhood?

13:40 Well, I had a happy childhood. I can tell you that there was a patch of Woods next in the house that we always got to play in and that was always good for a kid. I remember we have BB gun fight some things like that. Then the baby guns weren't very powerful Batman, but I can remember my brother Jeff getting shot in the back my mama having to get a knife and eat the baby out. So that was probably a close-range shot. I wasn't willing to do that. I'm not sure who did but I can remember that has a child not played baseball a lot started off playing in the yard. The number that had organized baseball and I never knew how you could sign up. And so I missed first year or two cuz I guess my parents weren't that involved and trying to get me into sports, but I figured it out. Finally when I was ten you're asking to sign me up and start playing baseball and

14:36 Play no threat little league in the Babe Ruth league in the coat Lee. No 16 and donate All Stars. Sometimes played baseball in high school. And then I had a scholarship offer to a college called brewton-parker College in South Georgia. My mom was living by herself at the time.

14:57 There was a girl who was the girl in box?

15:03 Noted scholarship go whenever you have an opportunity and there might be a girls thing in the way. I'm not sure if it's the best to follow you dream. I'm sure it probably is sometimes it's good to stay with a girl to find me a good one.

15:21 Other than that, I think you know we covered it with the the church and had a lot of fun with my brothers and sisters. They weren't home a lot when I was young son went out to the service our family served in every service with the Navy going to have a brother in the one of my dad was in the Air Force and I know he drove a P-51 plane at one time and then I had my brother and he's in the Marines and Jeff was in the Army. He went to Vietnam and got several metal so that Tommy was in the Air Force and Butch had a hearing problem so he didn't get to serve in the service, but I think everybody can let the me to serve Navy since I was on the Wind didn't hit that service. So actually I went through sign up one day and when I went to sign up if they had just closed I think we got there may be at 5:15 in their closed at 5 and the next day. I got a job offer from JCPenney.

16:21 I started working at JCPenney and start going back to school trying to learn to geology and that way but I came that close to joining the Navy say a lot of things could have been different the day when Edward come back when he came back from a rain come up to the school and my brother. He's five years older than me and went to the Marines and when he got back from the basic training it come up to the hospital where I went to Jordan High School in Columbus, but he would do push-ups and stuff in the Breezeway and it kind of embarrassed me in a way, but I was proud of him since I do remember when you graduated that you went to

17:13 I think it was Parris Island and that's where you went into the basic training and when you graduated I was 16 and I just started driving. So I drove my mom all the way from Columbus to Parris Island South Carolina, which is a long way and I was only 16 my mom never drove. So it was kind of an experience getting her back. But my first impression when I got there was it was pretty awesome because of the Marines that we'd ask for directions on how to get there and they still so straight and spoke so directly and it was kind of Mason just to see the transformation my brother took when he became a marine. I was really proud of them.

18:00 Finally tell me how you chose my name and tell me about my child did it was a choosing your name? I always knew your name years before you even born your name and John is it your braids? John is after my Father John and Ezekiel, of course, you know this but my mom's name is Ezekiel. That's the story within itself when they were expecting her and Louisiana, they wanted a boy and so after she was born her mother died during the childbirth in since I had wanted that boy named Ezekiel, they never Ezekiel anyway, and so she always went by the name Pat. I don't know why I named wasn't passing. Her name is Ezekiel Saw is needed if I had a boy at the end of 96.

18:55 Hard name she thought but that she was she be honored as far as you you know, you've been a blessing to us some of the things that stand out that I remember is that we remember you had to sleep with us every night when you're a baby, you know, sometimes when a baby starts crying a lot of parents and just let the baby cry and cry yourself to sleep, but we weren't like that we couldn't stand to hear you cry so we can pick you up out of the crib and bring you the bed with us and sleep with us in the bed and I can't remember how long you slept like that with us, but you left until you started sleeping in your own bed.

19:36 Other than other things I can remember is when Landing was born we brought you up to the hospital and you're only 16 months apart and brought you in in your toddler and your mother mother's mother Mimi brought you in and remember you walking up to the crib and peering over the crib and looking and seeing Landing in you're so happy. You are always in a happy-go-lucky and you have blond hair back then with your hair now, it's kind of brown. You have probably blonde hair for how many years

20:10 After six or seven years old, but he always said you look like a little is who in Whoville when you're a baby. I thought that was kind of you always been real sweet and caring loving you been funny. You know Facebook is real popular. Now, sometimes I look at your post and I see some of the things you post and it cracks me up. Think. I can remember is being in your high chair. You're a toddler and I guess you've had a hard day or whatever. You're about to fall asleep. I think we got a video of it somewhere of it. You're trying to eat chicken nuggets and you're trying to go to sleep at the same time. You catch up bobbin and it was the funniest thing that we had a little table that we had and I

21:03 Does a little blow plastic tables? I think it was made by Fisher-Price or something, but y'all would sit there and eat at the little table on me. And Mom is a seat at the big table and you're so caring and I always want to take care of your little brother. And I remember you would feeding food and things like that across the table cut your little plastic spoon in the pudding cup and leave it over there for Landon to take a bite of one other thing. I can remember this the uppers basketball league, which is a Christian basketball leaving now playing in and you're probably six or seven years old Landing head know he was playing and then I swap out players, but why he was playing he got bumped by another kid. I know that kid didn't bump him on purpose, but he got bumped. So when that swap players you came out and they made they make you stand across from the other players in the line facing your opponent. So when you were facing the kid it

22:03 Matt Landon you put your fist in your hand like you're going to bust in my purse and your only six or seven years old. So I thought that was pretty funny how you're serious about it. And you know, I had to pull you to the side but hey, we don't do that that the key is it was a accident and then that's treat him with respect. So there's a some of the things I remember about to you and I guess, you know you were with them to you two or three years, I think with your grandmother Mimi and that was when your firstborn I figured two or three years old and ham sandwiches where your favorite food is always have me meme make you what kind of lizards eat.

22:44 To make me a ham sandwich with Brian Cunningham Cunningham if it wasn't made it and it was just cheese and mayonnaise and cheese mayonnaise and then like

23:02 Little Debbie girl bad thing. I don't know. How do you think about me now real proud of you? I think you're a good person and know first and foremost. That's probably the biggest thing. I'm proud of that. You're a good person. You never get in trouble you're respectful for every two adults and your peers always say, yes, sir. And yes, ma'am. So proud of that. So proud of something, you know, that was your choice of music was a little more refined, but I think every parent

23:46 He wants to try everything but modern rock and everything screamo music or whatever. You know, I hate screamo. Tell me what you like that is where you got like.

24:05 Imagine like Led Zeppelin with screaming in it. That would be screamo Cheetos with screaming in it that be screamo.

24:17 I can't even begin. Okay. Well, you know, I'm real proud of you and you know, you could do a lot better in school. And you know, I think some of that it's the ADHD and

24:41 Not

24:42 Capable

24:44 It's just getting it's not that is not capable of more so that they all tell us that you're testing everything. You just not very organized, but it'll come together. We love you and woke or going to help you find your way. You're a good driver.

25:10 You better learn a lot, but Landon get a few questions in.

25:17 All right.

25:20 Well, my first question is about to ask you what the happiest time of your life was if you can remember.

25:26 Well, I guess on that question. There's a there's always the standard answer if she can give like when you both of y'all were born and the day I got married before all happy moments, but I'd rather talk about just some that stand out my mind like when they're graduating college, I guess that's another standard answer but that was one of them the happiest moments in my life. I was the first one to graduate college from my family so that gave me I guess a little extra pride and plus it took me so long to graduate in college and it wasn't a 4-year plan. I was more on the 10-year plan you had to work and go. Yeah. I got Social Security. If you know my dad died when I was 13, so I got Social Security benefits to attend school which helped but you know in a way

26:16 I kind of felt my mother graduated more and I did cuz she is the one that work hard and kept giving me the money for tuition and encouraged me and things like that. So in the way, I feel like she graduated and not me, you know, I just did the school work, but that was a happy time and then you know that when me and mama got married was a happy time and not just a marriage ceremony itself. I can remember it Pacific Time or we had gone to the reception that Uncle Sammy's house which was a big mansion that Antebellum lookin house and have horses and things like that. But we had a reception there. We got married in a little small church was a Methodist Church near Las Vegas just get hits there, but everybody started talking to us like they wanted to go to the wedding and

27:13 I cannot believe you're going to go to Las Vegas you're going to do this to me. And so we threw a wedding together. I was coming. We had one of my friends Terry had purchase us a room at the Hilton in Downtown Columbus in the historic area. And so weird after the reception we were going to the Hilton at parties with some of our friends and enjoy our room. So I remember driving from Uncle Sonny's house to the Hilton Hotel and just looking over at her and seeing that beautiful she was

27:50 No just made me happy inside that I was married and especially to her. So that was a happy time that's been a lot of others. But I guess I was the one that kind of Stand Out times when I was a kid playing baseball in there one time went four-for-four for the Pirates against the Dodgers who wore the number one team and some lady in concession stand said, hey and Brian went four-for-four and in hindsight and as an adult, I know she was just saying that to get a rise out of me or to just kind of brag cuz I was standing outside but

28:25 4:44 4:44 in the morning. It's the number of Warren and high school when my mom died that the night she died. I woke up from a sound sleep just like somebody that jerk me up and I looked over at the clock and its at 4:44. So that was kind of weird the next where we doing up at 4:44 in the morning. You said 444 when I was born that's how that went in that. We just kind of freaked us out where like wow she came to tell you. She's alright another freaky thing is she had a Christmas cactus that she had given me that she passed away then a Christmas cactus bloom on her birthday.

29:25 Discipline wants on her birthday. The cat killed it the cat gets everything.

29:44 Those are the happiest times.

29:49 That's a little bit of my mom dying. I guess it was the saddest day in my life. I remember since my dad died when he was 13 when I was 13, you know, she raised me by herself older brother's but they were all gone. So it was just me and her for the most of my teen years anyway, but what I remember from that there's a funeral that day just taking the pain in my heart and

30:19 It was a lady there. That was one of my friends mom Wayne Morris. It was his mom is a smart person had grown up with them and

30:29 Remember her coming up to me and tell me it's going to be all right. I hadn't tried up until that time and then I hugged her and I started crying and that was just real sad.

30:44 So that was a real sad day, but me and my dad dying. That's 13 then I don't know. I can't really say it was a it was a sad day but being 13, you don't think of that buy that means sad in hindsight is sad, but when I was 13, I was out riding my bike. All these people are coming to the house and I was thinking why these people coming to the house. I'm riding her Saturday to go to the funeral and my mom tell me that he's not ever coming back. So

31:17 That's why I say I'm sorry.

31:23 All right home you always talk to me about how you lot of travel and we've been a lot of places like.

31:29 Kentucky this past October November whenever that was and we travel a lot about every summer were some of the places that you have been without us. That wasn't one of the happiest times two is that day we went to Kentucky was just me you and Zeke and we flew from Atlanta. I'm sorry from Birmingham to Louisville. And I think it was the next day. We had a real full day went to Golden Co Auburn play Kentucky, which was in Lexington, but we started in Lewisville went from Lewisville. Lantana Place. Mark's Feed Store from smoking Mark is r and Suzanne's his sister Suzanne husband, but we ate their barbecue is great and we left and went to the Wild Turkey Distillery and we saw how they make Wild Turkey Bourbon, which is interesting then we went to the racetrack and watch a horse when we watch one horse race with

32:29 $20 on a horse to win and he came in last place. And that was that Pickler day was the day of the game when Auburn play Kentucky and Auburn by the way, Auburn won national championship last year. So it was ironic that we got to go to the Kentucky watch Auburn play and then they win the national championship same year, but it was eating the traveling with my boys went to the bourbon Place went to the horse race and went to the game that night. So that was when the counselor

33:06 And went to the Nickelback concert while we were there.

33:11 For future Generations Nickelback sucks. Anyways, I have traveled a lot a lot of it's been with football games with my daddy is in the flu to Houston. What's the Falcons in the Oilers? And then to Chicago with a my friend Alan to watch the Cubs and Wrigley Field, which was great.

33:45 Something About Mary and Mama, could you tell me something? Oh, yeah, that's when we went to Chicago is the same time that the eating and I were dating and tired of all the partying with my buddies and going out and wanted to settle down so it's kind of like the trip to Chicago was the final straw and I wanted to get married and he was the one I was pretty sure I thought all my friends about it. So when I got back I decided I wanted to get with her and get married and he said you were looking off the Sears Tower. Everybody was with one everybody know all these people that were in love and that you were in love and then you came home and asked me to marry you and it is snow today. I asked you to marry me.

34:33 How to

34:42 Some of the family trips like on his birthday we go down to Florida for his birthday. Usually every year and that's been fun.

34:52 I guess when you get older you'll do a lot more traveling at you and Zeke both and you know, this is like when we went there on a family trip to the Grand Canyon and I want to see some geology and it's probably the most magnificent place on Earth to go to see that and so we went to Las Vegas in the best place.

35:16 And I remember going to New Orleans to you and went to Bourbon Street that isn't in another and then I realized that they were saying things that I didn't probably notice and should have it should have

35:38 And now you say that I'm at Bourbon Street. Yeah, we went there and went only walk maybe 20 feet and both of you said we want to leave.

35:50 Why cuz there's teenagers in the drinking beer. There's there's college students that drink a beer this one with the Sugar Bowl.

36:01 As far as child in those are some places that we've been I've also been to Boston with a friend to see Fenway Park and you know, what kind of like the old ballparks been to Miami when the factors played in the Super Bowl? Well, so it would work around a lot men to Dallas Kansas City St. Louis Memphis. Me and Mama went to New York for my 50th birthday wishes. I recommend you guys going to New York soon as you can cuz it was such awesome clothes.

36:31 We're going to go back soon. All of us will gas. Yeah, we'll take you with us next time the landing.

36:39 You know course you're named after my father.

36:43 Alice random. Yeah, go ahead.

37:03 You love me tell me about you know, your hopes and dreams for the future for me and Zeke station. I'm not just because it probably get you a better job, but it just makes you a better person. I think they have all the knowledge and just to know everything that you can know. I'm trying to say is maybe teaching on both of you and that would be a good profession know. It's it's giving back to the community and is something I think that the profession where you can see your work and see what your work gives back to the community. So that's important. Now, I just want you to have a good life and then meet a nice girl get married, nice family and I want you to believe in God believe in Jesus that he was our savior things like that, but I won't let any father probably wants.

38:03 So you can live and be good people.

38:07 Okay, you have a problem with me.
