Sandra (S) asks her father Joo Haeng (J) the date of the day he arrived in the U.S. It was August 8, 1964.
J talks about storing jars of kimchee in Ms. Winnie Broccoli's refrigerator on his first night in Washington.
J talks about his first job in Washington, D.C., at The Sheraham Hotel.
J talks about meeting Billy Graham's father-in-law while working at The Hotel Washington. This man, in addition, to LBJ's chief of staff, helped when it was time for J to apply for citizenship.
J tells the story of having a ruptured appendix and having his hospital bill paid for him.
J recounts the story of walking to work to The Willard Hotel over two miles in an ice storm in 1965, the manager (Mr. C.L. Ornstein) seeing him do this, and how that made an impression on the manager.
J talks of his loyalty to Mr. Ornstein, but that Mr. Ornstein's death due to injuries from a car accident soon thereafter, made J feel he was free to look for work elsewhere than The Willard Hotel. Otherwise, he thinks he may have stayed there his whole career.
