Description

Friends Beth Brockman Miller (56) and Ermyn King (70) talk about the impact of the Chautauqua Institution on their lives. They reflect on some of their memories of growing up at Chautauqua and the sense of community that they have found there.

NOTE: Five Chautauqua Conferences on U.S.-Soviet Relations were held yearly from 1985 through 1989. The first was at Chautauqua Institution, second near Riga, Latvia, third back at Chautauqua, fourth in Tbilisi, Georgia, and fifth at the University of Pittsburgh. "Home stays" (during which visiting U.S. or Soviet citizens had the opportunity to lodge with local families) were part of the last three conferences, in particular, underscoring the initiative's significant "citizen diplomacy" dimension. The 297 American delegates of the fourth (1988) conference (referenced in this StoryCorps conversation) included about 150 Chautauquans, 10 Chautauqua staff members and spouses, and about 25 each government and media representatives, plus performers, program speakers, translators, and others.
