Bob Pearson (70) and Carlos Rodriguez (20) have a One Small Step conversation in Charlottesville, VA. Bob is an Air Force veteran and Carlos is a second-year student at UVA. Bob grew up in a very white community while Carlos grew up in a diverse neighborhood in the Bronx, and they discuss how these backgrounds have shaped the way they see issues. Carlos shares the challenges of being a first-generation student navigating a different environment at UVA and in Charlottesville, and Bob discusses how he felt a similar culture shock when he joined the military in the 60s. They share their journey into becoming more politically aware and the issues they care about, including national service, minimum wage, racism, and health care.
