Subject Log / Time Code

Jennifer Frederic (J) asks Carol Nine (C) to talk about growing up in Romeo, Michigan.
C says she wants to talk about an African-American lady (or "Negro", as C says, using her generation's word), Amanda Moore who helped many children.
C, who is white, says she didn't see "color" as a child and talks about playing with white children and African-American children.
C tells the story about her parents finding out she had gone to an African-American friend's house when she was a child and how she was told that was not a thing she could do.
C tells the story of her father threatening to not let her go to college if she kept walking to school with an African-American boy who was her friend.
C talks about how the children that Amanda Moore cared for were very accomplished.
C talks about her fiance, and later her husband, who was of Cherokee Indian ancestry.
C tells of giving a speech as a young adult about the injustices suffered by African-Americans when traveling south of The Mason Dixon Line, the silence it was met with, and her surprise at the controversy.
