This One Small Step conversation was recorded in Charlottesville, Virginia as part of the Sorensen Institute’s summer High School Leaders Program in 2023. Colin Heil (17) is from McLean and Josie Fischman (17) is from Charlottesville. Colin shares about how growing up near DC has impacted his life, including his political interests. Josie shares how going on long drives with her dad created a space for interesting and educational conversations. They discuss their early memories of politics, and how their families and experiences have shaped their existing beliefs. Josie shares that switching from private to public school opened her up to a more diverse cohort of classmates and experiences. Colin shares the challenges of being a young and moderate conservative in a very divided part of the country. They thoughtfully explore misunderstandings between parties and close by sharing what they learned about each other.
