Description

One Small Step conversation partners Cynthia "Cindy" Budge (68) and Dave Loy (69) sit down for an in person conversation to talk about their lives, their opinions, and beliefs, and find some common ground. Their conversation focuses on gender roles and discrimination and the perception a woman doing "man's work".

Subject Log / Time Code

Cynthia "Cindy" Budge (CB) talks about her work experience in Jackson Hole doing seasonal jobs, like ski patrol at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.
Dave Loy (DL) talks about feeling spiritually connected when he is in nature, ranching, hunting, and horseback riding.
Both talk about the people who have had the greatest influence on them. CB talks about her son teaching her most about how to be a parent and DL talks about his grandfather.
CB talks about her conservative upbringing being influenced by some Jackson "outsiders" that changed her political thinking.
DL brings up congressional act and the control people in unelected positions have over everyday Americans, like the Environmental Protection Agency and the IRS.
Both lament that locally the raising of property taxes has driven retired and middle class people to sell their homes and move away from Jackson.
CB talks about sharing custody with her child's father when they divorced. That was avant-garde in the 70s. And her divorce also got her into the work force doing jobs that women weren't commonly doing in the 70s.
CB talks about driving in the Demolition Derby at the Teton County Fair in the men's division instead of in the women's division.
CB remarks that she and DL have had similar life paths where they haven't had a plan for their lives, but have let things unfold "going with the flow."
They talk about conversations with people who they disagree with.
They talk about social media feeding conflict. disconnection, and misinformation.
DL asks CB about people who have the same point of view as her but are extreme in their delivery. She brings up her position as pro-choice.
DL talks about his views on abortion being "conflicted" complicated by his Catholic upbringing and his feeling that individuals should have personal choice.
CB talks about gay rights, trans rights, and leads into discussion of transgender women in sports. CB brings up her personal experience competing and working in male-dominate sports/fields in outdoor recreation (ski patrol, mountain guide for Exum.)
CB and DL talk about being seen as an "underdog" as a woman.
CB asks DL what he respects about her positions even when they don't see eye to eye.
CB says she has faith in society to come together even though there are such political differences because of this One Small Step conversation.
