Subject Log / Time Code

Dave (D) and Kathy (K) share why they wanted to participate in today’s interview.
D says he is concerned about white supremacy. He explains more about his shirt that says “All Life Matters.” D says he is a big proponent of Black Lives Matters and that the movement prompted him to make the shirt. D says he is conservative but has moved to a more moderate position over the years.
K shares the key to her long successful marriage. She says she gives all the credit to her wonderful husband.
K says more about her faith journey. She says she grew up Catholic and it was all she knew for a long time. K says as an adult she started to pull away. She says she felt like the Catholic treatment of divorced people, gay people, and women was wrong. K says the sexual abuse scandal in the Catholic church was the last straw. She says she tried to find another church but everything reminded her too much of being Catholic. She says she likes “this Kathy” more than the “Catholic Kathy”. She says “this Kathy” is a lot more open to other people.
D says the most influential person in his life is Richard Rohr, who has greatly influenced his faith and spiritual life. D says he was impressed by how big Richard’s view of God was.
K says her husband has been the most influential person in her life. She says being around him has helped her be more calm and more appreciative of the world. K says her husband is very informed and involved in Native American issues.
D says he has shopped around for different churches. He says he spends time in meditation and prayer but has had hard time finding a formal church. D says he feels like unfortunately the Catholic church is a white supremacist institution. D and K discuss Pope Francis.
K describes her personal political values. She says we should be taking care of the least fortunate around us. K says she does not understand the Republican party and the party’s support of Donald Trump.
D says he is a registered Republican but grows more moderate everyday. He says he is really concerned about the polarization in the US and says he also cannot relate to anything about Donald Trump. D says he is conservative because he does believe there can be a thing as too much government which would be inefficient.
D says he remains optimistic because he believes that people are good at heart.
