Description

One Small Step conversation partners David Wiebe (67) and Anthony Byrd (66) discuss family, religion, and the transformative moments that shaped their beliefs.

Subject Log / Time Code

Anthony Byrd (AB) asks David Wiebe (DW) why he went to Chad. AB calls Chad "such a dangerous place..." DW says he went there as part of a Mennonite mission and says that despite the fact that he was robbed at gunpoint during the trip, his experience was overwhelmingly positive. AB says his son (Anthony Byrd, Jr.) is thinking about going to Ghana and that he worries for his safety. DW assures him that AB his son will most likely be safe and have a positive experience.
AB talks about his earliest memory of politics - the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963 when he was six years old. He says it was the first time he saw his mother (Marinelle Van Pelt Byrd) cry. She said that JFK represented hope to his mother and many other people. DW also shares his memory of the JFK assassination.
AB talks about what he has learned about the world. He says there are some good people but also a "tremendous" amount of negative people. He wonders aloud who profits off of human misery. DW says it is everyone's job to "lift up those who unite us."
AB asks DW if he ever doubted his own political beliefs. DW talks about getting his news from NPR and The New York Times but also watches FOX News. He says he looks for the differences in how the outlets cover certain stories. He says he will "hold his nose" and vote for Joe Biden for president in the 2024 election.
AB talks about his hopes for the future: peace and freedom. But he also says he fears Donald Trump being re-elected to the presidency in the 2024 election.
