UVA students Mary Margaret, 20, from Dallas, TX, and Emma, 19, from Fauquier County, VA recorded a One Small Step conversation as part of their course 'Democracy and Public Service'. During this conversation, Emma and Mary Margaret discussed a variety of topics considering their upbringing, the influence of their parents, their first interactions with politics, and the differing roles politics and public policy currently play in their lives. They discuss what they are currently pursuring in school - two very different majors, veterinary medicine and public policy - and what led them to these passions. Both participants grew up in areas that presented opposing political views, yet the participants have similar political ideologies on many topics. While they differ in their feelings towards interacting with policy, both hope to be involved and educated in the coming political election.
