Description

In 1966, well before he pursued a career in computer science, Gerald Haskins turned down a job at a circus and decided instead to ride his Vespa motor scooter from Florida to California planning to finish in New York. But, in San Francisco, he met a young jazz singer (whom he later married), and the two of them set off for Brazil - where Gerald hoped to learn to play bossa nova. After several fraught adventures, including one in Jamaica, when thieves threatened to kill them, the young couple agreed that traveling to England might be safer. In this Fearrington StoryCorps episode, Gerald tells how his open mind took to the open road.
