Description

My grandmother, Mary Guzzo, was born and grew up in a poverty stricken community in Brooklyn, New York. She lived in a small apartment complex with her older sister and two younger brothers. Her father remained in her life until she was about eight years old when her parents got a divorce. This forced her single mother to raise four kids all while struggling with money. Her grandmother stepped in to help her as her mother was ill with polio. My grandmother revealed “when I look back I gave my mother quite a hard time growing up...and I do regret it because when I look back on it, all the things she was trying to do for me was for my own benefit.” She endured through the challenges and went on to find the love of her life and a stabile job. Sadly, her husband soon died and she struggled to gain her independence from the pain that grasped her and eventually realized she could “accomplish more than she ever thought she could do.”
