Joy Perez (J) describes how her family ended up moving to Massillon, Ohio. Note: Joy says her family arrived at Ellis Island in 2018 but after the recording explained that she meant to say 1918.
J talks about her schooling experience. She describes what going to football games was like.
J talks about her grandmother's cooking.
J says she was the first woman in her family to attend college. She adds that she attended Kent State University.
J recalls her brother being on campus during the Kent State shootings.
J says after graduating she lived and worked in Cleveland, Ohio and then Wisconsin. She adds that she worked as a teacher and later a sales rep. J says that eventually her and her then husband decided to move to Florida.
J says she realized teaching was more of her calling and returned to teaching once she was in FL.
J describes what her dream classroom looked like. She says this was during the time that home economics was still valued.
J says she got divorced and never remarried but had a son and raised him as a single mother.
J says she enjoys swimming and uses it as a form of meditation.
J describes how she's spending her time during her retirement: volunteering.
J shares the mottos she likes to follow in her life. She talks about the importance of balance.
