Joy Young a long time fan of StoryCorps thought a conversation in One Small Step would be great.
Joy talks about considering herself to be follower of Jesus’s teachings and not the label of Christian.
Joy says “being in a garage doesn’t make you a car, and being in church doesn’t make you a Christian.”
April talks about not being religious but based on Joy's explanation she could see herself wearing a “What Would Jesus Do” bracelet.
April talks about how she could not have been a teacher unless she was an optimist. Blue collar parents taught her if things need changing people should take action.
Joy talks about how she feels that families are becoming more important.
Joy says not democrat or republican, she uses the term “Individual Consideration” as her approach to issues.
April recalls her mother being distraught when Ronald Regan was elected, saw the effects of dismantling federal environmental protection, ultimately becoming an activist.
April doesn’t practice religion but agrees with Joy’s views of Jesus’ service to to people.
Joy is pro-life but also concerned with the need to support the lives of people and children. Abortion is an ‘Individual Consideration’ of a woman.
April says to Joy “You’ve made me cry twice…faith is not labels.”
