Description

Juliana Aragón Fatula (66) talks to her friend Tracy Harmon (59) about being a corn mother as well as what she’s learned about her ancestry through her genealogy work.

Subject Log / Time Code

Tracy Harmon (T) introduces Juliana Aragón Fatula (J).
J says she wants to talk about her ancestor, Jose Antonio Gomez. J says she is also a corn mother, a woman who has been recognized by her community for her excellence in the arts and her work in the community service. J reads a statement about her personal philosophy and her beloved aunt, who was also a corn woman.
J says she's been doing genealogy research for years. She says she learned she has Southern Ute, Navajo, and Pueblo ancestry in her lineage. J says genealogy has become a passion for her and she hopes to write something from what she's learned.
J says she knows about Jose Antonio Gomez's life after he was adopted. J says she wants to go on a pilgrimage to go see the places where her ancestors lived.
J says she learned how to garden, grow things, and cook from her father. "I have ancestors that are these incredible hard working people that survived during terrible times," J says.
J repeats that she is honored to be called corn mother. She says it is not who you were but who you are now.
