Juliana Paine (20) and Logan Smith (22) have a One Small Step conversation at the VPM office in Charlottesville, Virginia. Their conversation was recorded during Democracy360, the Karsh Institute of Democracy’s three-day biennial conference. Juliana is a third-year student at UVA and Logan is a senior at UVA Wise and president of the UVA Wise student government association, and both students are originally from Southwestern Virginia. Juliana describes her interest in free expression and her involvement in student organizations that promote dialogue. Logan shares his desire to be involved in local politics and governance in the Appalachian region, which has been overlooked and underserved. Juliana shares her thoughts on nihilism, and discusses identifying as a political independent. Logan is more conservative leaning, which he attributes partially to his upbringing. They find a shared interest in Robert Kennedy’s presidential bid.
