Friends and co-creators Kalika Davis [no age given] and Laurie Tarbell (47) discuss their connection to the Occidental Life Building in downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico, and their vision of transforming it into a community space.

Kalika (K) and Laurie (L) introduce themselves and speak about their respective ethnic and cultural ancestry. K talks about how she arrived in New Mexico and her connection to the Navajo Nation.
L and K speak about their connection to Bernadette, a friend and medicine woman. K describes how Bernadette has been like a grandparent to her child.
L says her ancestors came to New Mexico looking for healing and a connection to the earth. L adds that she grew up in the Chihuahuan Desert and came to Albuquerque to study architecture. L reflects on her first impressions of Albuquerque.
L explains how she and her husband bought the Occidental Life Building in downtown Albuquerque. K says as a young native person she never thought she would have access to a building like that.
L says the Occidental Life Building was built in 1917 and details some of its history and architectural features. L says during her first walk-through she felt that it was a big responsibility to become the steward of the building.
K talks about how she become involved with New Mexico Community Capital and the organization's move to the Occidental Life building.
L says she experienced a lot of isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. L recalls running into K's husband and feeling inspired by his and K's work and how grounded it was in community.
K talks about her future visions for the Occidental Life Building. K further details the work that New Mexico Community Capital engages in.
