[Recorded: Friday, September 22, 2023]
Kendall Hyer (19) from Louisa, VA, and Emma Hinson (19) from Hunstville, AL participated in this One Small Step conversation as part of their Public Service Pathways 1-credit UNST course at UVA. Emma relays her experiences growing up in Alabama, including how being around hunting culture prompted her to become a vegetarian. Kendall shares how her family chose to live in Louisa as a more affordable alternative to Charlottesville and relates her experience watching her parents navigate the recession. Emma shares her family’s experience fostering a student with a difficult home situation and describes how her mother navigated parenting a black boy amid heightened awareness of police brutality. The two spend much of their conversation breaking down moments when they witnessed casual and institutional racism, inside the classroom and out.
