Kirk (K) talks about growing up in Utah. K recalls seeing migrant workers on the farm and it sparking an interest in other people and cultures. K talks about visiting Mexico and taking Spanish classes as a young boy.
K says he served an LDS mission in the Philippines. H adds that he studied Geography in undergrad.
K talks about his first teaching abroad experience in Guam. He says he went on to teach in the Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Switzerland, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia.
K tells Linda (L) about his return to Cache Valley. He says he taught for a semester in China before the onset of the covid-19 pandemic. K adds that he will be returning to China for one final year of teaching abroad.
K recalls getting bit by a fiddle spider while abroad in South Africa.
K says China is his favorite country that he's lived and worked in.
K talks about the differences in teaching overseas versus teaching in America. K and L discuss the challenges teachers in the US are facing.
K remembers being in Sri Lanka during the 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake and Tsunami.
L says connecting with K during his travels ignited in her a desire to travel beyond her hometown and the United States.
K says being involved with the international student community at Utah State University has helped him be happy in Cache Valley.
K reflects on what teaching abroad has taught him.
K explains how he keeps in touch with his students. He recalls reuniting with an old student who started his own business in the Dominican Republic and seeing how his teachings affected the student.
