Martin Olson (45) interviews his mother Ulla Olson (75) about her childhood and life in Sweden and later her move to the United States.

U says she was born in Sweden and lived in a suburb outside of Stockholm.
U tells the story of how she got the name Ulla.
U paints a picture of what her childhood was like. She says she befriended kids in her neighborhood and they spent time playing in everyone’s yards. U says in Sweden people are allowed to be on other’s land so long as you do not disturb anyone or harm the land, so all the farms in the area were land for recreation.
U says while she was growing up there was a young German woman living with her family who helped look after the children.
U says when she was younger she was very crafty and loved to knit and make clothes for her dolls.
U explains how she figured out she was dyslexic. U says when she came to the United States, she continued her studies at college and today she loves writing essays and papers.
U says more about her decision to continue her studies and go to college in the United States. U says she graduated in social sciences and decided that she was going to study chemistry.
U describes the year she lived and studied in Stockholm. She recalls driving for her first time in Stockholm.
U says she learned Swedish, German, and English growing up. She says she lived in Germany and later England for several weeks to improve her language skills.
U recounts the story of how she met her husband during a road trip.
U details further her experience moving to America. She says she eventually stayed home with her children and loved it.
U explains that her husband was working and traveling a lot for work. She says her husband was presented with an opportunity to come to the United States through his company.
U describes what she expected life in America would be like. She says she was ready to fully live an American life but ended up connecting with other Swedes in America and having many girlfriends from Sweden.
U says every summer she would take her children back to Sweden. She says it was important to her and her husband that their children have their own connections to Sweden.
U says it has been a treat to watch her children grow up and start their own families.
U shares advice for her grandson: be true to yourself, go after your dreams, and be nice to other people.
U shares her hopes for the future. She says she enjoys traveling but it is also important to have friends and families around.
