Subject Log / Time Code

Cory (56) and Rich (57) Etchberger describe how their parents met and were married six months later. They explain that their father was in the Air Force and begin to detail the many places his career took them, beginning with Morocco, where CE was born.
CE and RE recall when their family moved back to states and they all had a difficult time adjusting to life off the base. RE in particular remembers having a hard time in public school.
RE and CE share their memory of the night they received a phone call informing them their father had been killed. RE remembers seeing his mother collapse to the floor and being told his father died in a helicopter crash. CE tells why he refused to go to the funeral, but describes how his grandfather took him to see his father in the casket the following day.
CE explains how they later learned that their father had been on a secret mission in Laos at the time of his death that had required him to be discharged from the Air Force, a process known as being sheep dipped. They also talk about learning that their mother knew of the mission and how he had been killed.
They recount what they have since learned about the nature of their father's death, how he was surrounded by North Vietnamese soldiers and shot after helping two of his fellow servicemen escape.
CE recalls receiving a phone call from President Obama asking him and his brother to come to the White House and accept the Medal of Honor for the father.
CE and RE talk about their mother and her integrity. They speculate on how and why she kept the secret from them and remark on how she changed after the death of her husband.
