07 My name is Quint newcomer. I am 51 years old. Today's date is October 31st 2018. Happy Halloween. We are in Athens Georgia and I am with the Stanley Stroud and we are friends.

27 My name is Stanley Stroud age 57 Thursday of October 31st. 2018 Athens, Georgia, and I'm here soon up with a friend of mine, squid.

41 Stanley when and where were you born? I was born in Athens, Georgia. What year I was born in 1962, right? What's your earliest memory is memory I would say is I'll probably about four years old. My dad bought me a Batmobile. You can get it ride it cuz I didn't make a sound did you grow up and spend your whole youth in Athens? Are there any funny stories that your family likes to tell about you when you were located cuz I didn't really think I can talk when I was younger cuz I never said anything or nothing yet. Nobody and one day I was at his convenience store and she's that I started talkin she's at but it was nothing nice.

41 My family, so I wouldn't talk either when I was a little kid, but I bark I thought I was a dog and he would get so mad at me for barking it. I did that same thing that I don't know what to do for that man. What's your best memory of your childhood? And I was coming up me and my brothers play together staff me know and we will always

24 Make stuff to play with you. Now know even though Mom and Dad buys something play with but he was always make something so we can make these look at cars now. It's like that and play with it and my brother my uncle we had this little talk with make cars out of matchboxes. Nice. How many brothers and sisters. Did you have I have one brother and two sisters are they older or younger? I have an older sister and my brothers yoga and my sister baby. Alright. Wow. Did you have a nickname? Did your family have nicknames for your my nickname was pike pike? Where'd that come from? I don't know my granddaddy. Just did you or did you have any high school friends already a nickname from your friends as he got older? Yeah. Yeah.

24 Because I would go behind it was like know what we played football together.

40 At least I got to be screwed. He's just call me scream today.

48 Stanley tell me about you told me a story is we were standing outside before we came in here when you were younger and and you had an accident in your treehouse tell me about that story again. He has enough that do you know before y'all get the free house? We got inspected Tree House, you know to make sure you're safe and everything and so one day because if we decide to go to tree houses in me and I go in at Riaz, even though he said not to and if he has pale and so when it fell down I feeling it with my feet first so much and nails.

27 And so I knew I was wrong by doing it so I didn't tell nobody so I let it go home for like I guess by two or three days and it got worse and worse and finally had to just say hey and I will take me to different doctors and stuff. You don't try to fix me fix my feet near they and are they said they thought it was too late that develop gangrene and they can't do it like about it. And so they want to amputate your house look here, but I do it every day met you know, and so they would take me and my dad told me around to different doctors and if they say Advocates you say no not my baby's feet. And so when they was in the grocery store live and I don't know what it was we was in line and she was told she was she was holding me and I asked out behind this. Is that what's wrong with the kid? She said he's got something on his feet. You know that he's a well

27 He's a well I can fix that and she said well, you can't she said yeah, you know it was dr. Somebody. I don't know what name was but he gave her a card and he said this is my adress. He's at in the morning. So the next day she takes me to this guy and he fixes up his stuff in his bag and look like mud or something and you put bags on feet. He said was if a couple weeks is that happened to clear it up. And so she was trying to figure out know what she did because she could find the card and she's like, well I got I know the buildings as a woman take it back to him and let you know that we go back to his place and is not it's not a doctor's office in the doctor didn't exist in a life where this is not a doctors offices in in this would have got him right here for you.

27 You are you have some other really interesting stories and you told me about your son when he was younger and tell me about the miracle of the doctor taking care of your son to kill. He was born with a heart disease. And so we would have to take him back before the doctor and they said well, you don't have to have open heart surgery and I will have to go in and close these hoes up and it's hard because I can barely breathe, you know, and he was 8 months old. So we took him to Atlanta to Egleston Hospital Atlanta and doctor but very next day.

17 Who's in the room we now and when I went to go you don't want to be closed eyes or Tuesdays are wet, but he jumped out the hospital bed and but he didn't know how to walk when we got to the hospital. And so I might as well come down the hallway outside the hallway, and how's he doing? Now? How old is he now? He's yeah, you told me about him as

08 Stanley and I we met because my son goes to Chase Elementary School here in Athens, he and we met because you're the crossing guard in the mornings among the many jobs that you do, it's fine. I remember you telling me about your son as we as we walk in the do the crosswalks in the morning tell me about how you met your wife. I'm at my wife at church. I was in South Carolina and so will we got finished singing it and she was outside and she said she told him because you said who is that guy? So he told me to come in and we hit me hit me hit off of a right and then how long until you all were married after.

08 We got married five years later years later. Remember your first kiss with her together. That is your special song. You know this song Katie. Can you sing a little bit of it? Do you remember it? I was so lonely you came into my life and love me only.

58 Yeah, that's that's why I thought that was you can do that while how long have you so how long have y'all been married now like 30 plus years. And I'll never get it right. So, what's the secret to a good long marriage? Oh man, we can each other man respectful all in tears of love the person that you're with. I love it. I love it. So my son is also in the music cuz you know, he is starting to learn how to play guitar. I can't tell you how much it meant to him that you gave them the guitar strap in the pic and the tuner and all those little things but it makes that young boy so happy and so just wanted me to ask you if you could play any guitar. What would be your favorite guitar to play?

58 Play we get tires out Fender Stratocaster tickpick me about this gets out because I still have it and I don't play with every once awhile. You know, I play on special shows in the last night and it's still smooth, but it's discolored and wipe there's like a cream color and whatever. He's like a man. Do you have a favorite song that you like to play? I would say I like to say A change is coming by Sam Cooke. Oh, yeah. I like I like to play that what do you like about playing that song? I like that.

58 Structure that the cords go along with the Philadelphia Soul. Yeah. It's like, you know what I even saying is all you can play it if you still feel the words yet feel it. Yeah. Can you sing a little bit about Song Hye. I was born by the river in a little tent just like the river. I've been running ever since he's been a long long time coming, but I know a change going to come. Oh, yes it is. If you could play music with anyone any musician, who would it be

51 I would say I would like to I would like to play with Stevie Wonder. Yeah. Yeah, I would love that kid that this guy can't see what he feels music. Yeah, you know, like I know how to play with you. I was just in case this happened to me one day I can still do it. Wow. And so that's that's why I do in the dog and I just play it how to fill it up to get Target. Oh, yeah. What's your favorite Stevie Wonder song? I like that song. I wish those days would come back once more. I like that.

51 Back of Louisiana watching y'all two and play. Is there a song that you hope to play one day with the splits and that you haven't played yet. I don't know is I cover so many of us. Yeah, we could be something else knew that you on the radio. I thought it was funny to hear you play the cameos. I enjoyed that. I remember that from when I was younger I bought to look top box.

51 I don't know that well, but I perform some I know or let you know. I'm still in the shed on it. Are you learning? That's right. You know what you don't have you for my older brother you let y'all know person exactly. So that's why I take my music I listen to these young guys that play music and I take that. I know you know, she must have refreshed, you know, can you play with Snoop Dogg anybody? You know, I'll be able to do it right David.

40 Got to be like oh antique keep it phrase. You know for sure. I love it that that you all have play in town because it's introduce my son who 7 to Motown music to sound deaden. It's wonderful that you all are bringing that to a young New Generation. It's really fun for them to see cuz one thing here on the radio, but to see it live and appreciate that he turned to me after we saw you that first time I like this music.

27 I'd like to know the songs to get their players, like in charge of the newest on keyboard player in charge a lot of stuff. So when you when you get an old-school stuff, you can hear the guitar player now and you can feel its flavor, you know, he's getting off with a keyboard. So it's not really real real guitar player. Just get down on it now. Yeah, when you let the artist play live if you got a real guitar player if you have a feeling do it because that's where you been. That's right you do. That's fun to Siri starting to learn that to a little bit.

23 Is there a song you want played at your funeral but something happy. Let me have I made it a great man. You going back tell me about your grandparents. You said your Grandpa gave you a nickname that they were sweet man. I didn't know they would do anything for anybody else. We had Big Daddy Mom and Dad, okay.

23 They they show that love your round, you know at the end of your they really show it to you.

35 Where they from Athens as well, so your family's been in Athens long time change and grow. I'm going to go to the University of Georgia game with my granddaddy on my mom's side and we would go to the railroad track. Oh, yeah. Yeah. I've heard about that on the tracks. We walk from Danielsville road to

11 Yeah. Wow, do you do there? He worked at the physical plant and a big family get-together Lawton have big family gathering together and my mom's dad that we go out there every Sunday, you know what, you know, we stayed in the neighborhood with my dad's parents off. So we see them every day at chickens.

11 My granddaddy was all all of his Mayo go to store. It actually is that you won't be by, you know, my grandma wants you fix different meals like like I didn't say anything to anybody have the vow. I took care of you though you may we have a great day.

29 Did how did you get involved in the church in with your choir, but I got really involved in church when I joined the choir, but the way I join the quiet, I really didn't join the choir at church one Sunday, and there was nowhere else to sit. So I said the question I stood up loud mouth with his high-pitched boy that you like a Girl by then.

29 Are you have a favorite song from a gospel song or song from church is when you carry me. Can you sing a little bit of that?

50 As I walk from there today, there's a comfort to know I would never leave this way before you leave away from harm and danger. I am set free because you carry of me and it is because it goes back to when she was scaring me back and forth to the doctors and stuff. You know, that's what that's not what this is about 2 foot person saying, but I got a personal relationship with absolutely. No, she can't be a lot. You know, she gave me for like 5 years. Wow.

43 Wow, by using my life. I couldn't walk cuz I was just lagging forward and you went from that, which is amazing to becoming a high school football star like you tell me about playing football in high school at Clarke Central football.

09 When I got when I got to school up there, I was always saw the football player back in the days. I haven't was Larry Larry Brown. Oh, yeah. I know so I took it so they put me at fullback, you know, I want to be a receiver but the coach of his that you can't catch and he was right. Is that what we can put that fullback and so that's why I don't do it. I play with Billy Hamilton coaching mentors that really motivated you and inspired Milton boxing.

08 And it's not like that. What what culture?

16 There and now we are going to get coach if it's if it's not a physical exam on your head for your boss, man is always hot crazy. But then you look you look at what it was doing. He's a senior for life, you know. Yeah, so you can't do this and and I took out the heart, you know, I got them about the track and you know what I was running Dragon outside of a quit, you know, and you know, he came to my house. You ain't going to quit and I didn't raise no quitter.

05 Why you taking that lesson through your whole life?

13 What you made it through cancer yet? Homie. Tell me about the illness and and how you got through that what gave you the strength then? What did you come out of that with did it change you and your perspective and outlook on life? Oh, yeah, and I'll

40 The funny thing about they was out I hate is too much ruined that my head over. How about you and my wife like, you know, you can go get that checked out anyway, okay, so I went and checked it out and they told me was a fatty tumor wait to get started on my way to work and I was at work and she was like, what are you at the hospital with you at work? I'm like she's at if you don't get that hospital and so my boss and thank God I did, you know, it was Kathy.

40 She tells me what you know.

42 They got somebody want to talk to you about a low what could it be? I'm like what they look like. They do you understand life. I'm smiling today like that. Now, you know, you know where I live at my joy, and we will pray for a minute and I'll my daughter brought me this book by Joyce Meyers to let nobody steal your joy and I'll reach out that book and you know, what's up uplifted, you know, don't go through chemo and radiation, you know, just you know, you're not feeling good, but keep that joy happy, you know.

42 And I like to do a little always going to keep me happy. So, you know, I'm not going to let this get me down and so I can tell you to play my church choirs. I play my band, you know, it is what I had chemo and I cannot hold my head up. But I knew that if I put that get the only hit that stage. I'm a whole different person. You know, how I got this is like this like that George's comes to him and I'm like damn he's a view like high in the world. Are you doing this man? And I like good Lord keep my joy, you know people come to my house and visit. I'll be outside cutting grass man on top of that light and I got canceled but you know, I ain't dead yet. You know, I still got like I live it to the fullest, you know, if I leave it at them leave happy.

40 You know it and I'm not going to I'm not going to leave you alone in a sad way, you know a lot of people.

02 That was do you have any regrets now? I live a good laugh out of that. God has been good to me. And you know, I always always have my keys. You know, where are you doing Live Well, you get out of life is what you put in lie, you know it is what you deserve, you know, if you do good you will be rewarded. If you do bad you be spanked, you know, but it's not buy me a good luck for the bakkie. You take this thing in you and you try to make the best of your life treat people good and people treat you good. You know, it was it a good pray for ya. So I try to keep that going, you know, my youngest son and he's he's he's he's he's real hyper.

02 Joy happiness may like I got you and you know when you see if he's always like bouncing off the walls as I can't ever slowed down cuz that's the way I have you down. Yeah, you know, he likes music. He plays drums also and now he sings and he likes me. I'm just like always so I can I look at some of the things to do tonight. I did the same thing and you know it. Like you say you reap what you sow

41 If I don't see you like so that that's what he does. I know you like cars. What's the favorite car? You've ever driven? Oh, yeah. 1979 Trans Am. Oh. Yeah, that's a beautiful girl. You've got a lot of good work on that. If you ever just taking it out and driven It Wide Open by Ben Ben that thing you know by now that my wife that's why I was driving really, okay.

41 What I thought I was out of work. I went to University of Georgia and I bought that car out there have been working about maybe like five years like that by Bjork on that car Corvette. What's the Corvette like to drive? I've never driven if you like speed and you like Yeah Yeahs with lots of it. You can come from people. Okay, my mom got a 1964 Corvette and my uncle said about the fountain somewhere driving too fast down the road 1977.

41 Oh, yeah. Yeah, I think so. I don't think I've seen that one band with me. Haha play by his grace when he was when he was like three years old. No desert 7-Eleven that car you say we know he said he told him he's at he's at it you will let me have this car and he said yeah, let's have it and it's a dentist had cancer and so before he passed he called him over to his house and he said he said that car that you wanted that he's a piece of yeah, she's aware.

21 Music he's he's one is yours. He's at he's a but we kept it up make a hangout you say about 17 years old with a 1977 Corvette age of a being bored. You know, what was your first car was a 69 Chrysler Station Wagon, Joe of the way I get the way I got this, it was my dad's car and I need a motor so

21 What you got cuz I got bipolar.

25 My old man, you know, it's always as well as your car is a 69 Chrysler Station Wagon and I drove that thing all through High School attached on it. I had to move hook apps not the thick white wall in under that she was not in there. I did I put an old Alpine.

13 I took 3 I took the 8-track and about to accept me and I'll have a bracket Slide Man and you take it out to her together and I had it well, but one without the other game on see you though, and I know and that's why I care at this all day while play and then we get the last one and start back at the Dollar Tree on all your buddies in the hallway. Are you having that's fine, but I had.

04 Diet. My first car was a 1971 Cadillac ATS Sedan DeVille. We bought from a funeral home way out somewhere out in Western Kansas that we found and it was in just mint condition. It only been driven by the cemetery and I get there. I wasn't 16 and I got this kind of 502 engine block this year who has fun to work on that's how I learned how to rebuild a carburetor was rebuilding the Carver man, that would fly to I was finally

45 And I do that the schools in that it was green with a green vomit out of a gas. I think I would drive from gas station to gas station. You know, I'll be on the way to school and I need some gas. So I will stop at a gas pump and I forgot that go to school man. Go back home.

33 My youngest he was $5. I'm out of gas. It is a thing. I did was funny watch me some down while working on cars. Do you learn how do you say well, I hope I'm thinking of money. Either that or you call me though. It said was wrong with it his you know, I know he can't do it.

33 He would call me and I will go I will go to Nashville. I will go there anyway to change a flat tire.

40 You know who got me? I got a flat tire to Nashville Tennessee cabins level. Yo, man. That's what I thought my daughter when she was 16 how to change her in tire for you know, if I can do anything else, but at least you can change. And so I stayed riding all the time. So my life I learned that if you buy a alternator and starter

27 Incubus bad time you call a screwdriver periplasmic, you can make it in the end on Stanley. I could talk to you all day like this, and I really appreciate you if he's coming in and having a conversation with me. It's been a true pleasure to appreciate you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for talking to me and baby. That's fine. I look forward to more.
