Description

This is a recording with Tom Fryer, a 1963 graduate of the US Air Force Academy and resident of Manhattan, Kansas, reflecting on some of his memories of the Academy. These included memories from the end of his fourthclass year running to Cathedral Rock, spending Christmas his fourthclass year on the Academy grounds and not being allowed to go home, and his time on Wing Staff in 1962 during the Cuban missile crisis. He also shares the story of shaking President John F Kennedy’s hand at graduation, learning years later about a photograph that was taken of that momentous time, and lastly, serving on a math committee at the Air Force Academy, to decide whether or not to keep issuing slide rules to cadets or moving to the HP calculator. (Spoiler: The committee voted to keep the slide rule one more year!)
