00:00 My name is Michael Michael Carey. I've been a member of the volunteer fire department for almost 50 years.

00:07 And the story starts out. It was 1974 and it was a Monday night. We were at a meeting. So we give a call to Howard County form for far.

00:22 Brush bar

00:25 So the first engine takes off was actually 103. So I'm driving the brush truck. We had a brush truck. So I'm driving a brush truck. So would go down Montgomery Street. It was a Jeep a Jeep. So we are we go down Montgomery Street, so

00:44 The guy riding officer's name is Ricky Turney. So he decides that look with let's go.

00:51 Down Main Street to the pool so we can sit so we started the fire so we go down by the

00:59 By the pool, which is a creek on the other one. They actually call it a small River.

01:05 Can we go see it from the from the banks of the

01:11 Northside

01:13 So I will receive your goal for which I put the Jeep in 4-wheel drive.

01:19 So we grow star going across the

01:24 Turn up a Little Patuxent solve the water, you know, we doing good all sudden, they drink drops. So we're right in the middle of the river.

01:38 Next thing. I know I'm up to my lap sending in the in the Jeep with water.

01:48 So I'm sitting here.

01:51 Try new

01:54 Get the Jeep started to get the Jeep started and it's not going anywhere not doing nothing and Ricky run off and also saygin jumps up on the robot.

02:07 And the lights are still going and we can see the lights we can see what it looks like a bubble bubble gum machine.

02:19 Then we're stuck so.

02:22 I jump out loud by this time. The water is up to my chest.

02:28 So I get outside. I made my way to the back to the banks of the of the other side.

02:37 So I'm running up Montgomery. I mean up 9th Street 9th Street, and you can see all the water, you know the steps that I made so I sat on the ground and took my running boots off and run the rest of the way up to you.

02:53 Back to the Firehouse in my house where we were standing in the in the bay where the Hummer was it went to the fire and all I was saying was it's in the river and the river be asked me says he said I thought you were on the call. I said I was he said

03:18 I said the cheapest is the Jeeps in the river and he started laughing and he wouldn't laugh and he was he was so I said, well he said where is it at in the river?

03:40 So we we jumped so

03:44 I started I didn't get in the car with him. So I'm running I'm running I'm running in front of the Chiefs car ran the Chiefs card to the show. Where the where the jeep was that show when we got back down to 9th and Montgomery Street where the pool was at.

04:03 You look to your right you can see the Jeep in the middle of the middle of the river with the lights still going to be still sitting on top.

04:15 So Nikki said somebody going to have to cut them damn lights off that truck.

04:22 And so then I had to had to make my way back out to see the Jeep cut the lights off.

04:30 Then I have to wait until

04:33 Clifford Clifford Mackey with the with the

04:41 Wooden utility truck while you telling truck with a winch on it. So he went he went out with your hair and tell me where the other Howard County fireman. We're at and 103 was that so I had to

04:54 Go back over to the other side.

04:58 Get the wish.

05:00 Bring it all the way back.

05:03 Get down Sick my head under the water to hook up to the

05:09 Second wind on the tube and bright and you have to pull us out.

05:17 And I remember when when we pulled it out, so we're going back down to 16.

05:24 And the truck was Lincoln somewhere where the no dunk tank and everything and water was water was everywhere when you know, you had a trailer water going down from

05:36 All Saints Row 2 216 back to the Firehouse cuz the car was only like a mile away from the from the Prince George and Howard County Line

05:46 And

05:49 Darren and and never destroy has never end in the whole time or every meeting every life members dinner every e Merced when when brace passed away. I have to tell the story about his weight challenge story.

06:16 It comes up and everything. So this is the most the most funniest thing that happens at the at the firehouse.

06:29 Everybody I mean all the people in the county. So we have a Marine Division. They are putting bringing life jackets outboard motors.

06:44 Who was Captain so who whoever was that? We were the first one to have the Marine Division in the county. And this is like I said, I've been here almost.

06:56 About 15 years and this is the most

07:01 Tom Browning told the story at least once a year or two or four times a year it just like, you know before you came here this morning they were throwing hints.

07:12 About job

07:15 About the internet and I can save everybody in the seventies everybody knew when you were in Holt County, but they really didn't know me personally, but then all Sunday they start ignoring every about the story about this incident happened in the history of one of the best stories one of the Best Western.

07:51 You never comes in and what when we get together.

07:55 Is is the hallways you tells a different story with a bald head water?

08:07 That happened but it isn't like that Sunday before this incident happened when we were playing softball on across from the firehouse. So

08:18 This I remember had International G named Georgie Huffman.

08:24 So we went back and we went down there and wrote across back and forth back and forth across that same spot because we could see the same conference that. When did that when the car came out?

08:39 That we drove back and forth across that.

08:42 What that Monday we didn't realize that WSSC had on the damn.

08:48 Open the dam that day and that's where all the water with cuz they had it open again.

08:54 And when we when we punch into that water.

08:58 Dakboard it was it was when I was sitting in the in the Jeep. What is the cheapest, you know setting up high, but when we went in that water because the water was to my wife so bad when I when I got out of the Jeep the water was up to my chest.

09:16 How deep in water was and plus what really made it so so funny was when I was sending the Jeep of the catfish a catfish where the cross my cross my heart and inside the walk cuz Laura has a walkathon and every time I walk by the river I can still see where we went down that have to move Sims and that's like I said that was in the seventies and you can see you still where I went down and that password cross to cross the water.

10:16 The river is about

10:19 How many feet how many feet?

10:25 Luke I Wanna Rock right in and then water just come up it was I got here when I got out of the truck got out of the Jeep.

10:46 I had to I had these running booster that you pulled up and so when I when I got there was so heavy for me to start running back up to the station after sit down and shut them off and you can just like close your eyes. You can see me running up 9th Street with a pair of socks on and and showing the path, you know, where I where I can and then when I was after I told the chief

11:16 I was running back down 9th Street, and you can see my foot cuz I wouldn't get in the car with him cuz I know he was mad and he smoked and he was just smoking a cigarette like he was like like like he was like he was just talking and he was he was he was smoking he was smoking. Like I said that storage been around the county.

11:46 For years and every time someone do an interview for the Fire Department fire department follis and and and always come up with the story about the about the chief. Well, every time we have life members dinner, like I say anything

12:16 Your story always always always come up there another story that comes up or anything, but it's always been a waste bin some dino funny incidents when you do things you said back and call at Montgomery Street.

12:45 Messi's parents are Ted Danson's house and it was actually someone crawled it was supposed to be cross the street, but it was 7:10. So on the third floor, I'm going with everybody knew when and Laurel, you know, everybody's clothes and and everybody knows everybody's house, you know know the people so when when the incident happened when you know, somebody's

13:11 Body personally that you know, you going to take a little extra time to get there quickly and

13:19 So if I was supposed to be up on the third floor third. The house got the house and everything and she has this big mirror big mirror upstairs.

13:37 So when I turn the corner, I love you. I thought you were somebody else and it was it was a reflection of me and and and the Bear.

13:48 You got hoes all I was charged and everything we're and they open there when we got there and we let the whole house up. We were surrounding the house.

14:00 And and we we are rushed to the door and everything so far supposed to be on the third floor and shake his hand shaking and everything what it was was nothing to it, but nothing to it.

14:19 But we all know you get a call. And also we ride down the road and smell of smoke with you know, where we know where that we are all geared up and resetting in the truck and we going down the road and

14:43 You are you are you kind of like your you all are up?

14:48 For that cuz you think you're going to get something and then know either you going to call and and you going to seeing and and you see smoke show on or either he's got five showing and then that

15:02 You get it, you know you got something going but then sometimes you go.

15:08 Go there and special like winter time. You hate, hate winter time when when you go and you sitting out there and you're exposed to everything all the elements.

15:18 Next time you turn around you're you're covered with ice your coat your hat and you can hardly move.

15:26 Moving. Thanks and you come back in to the station and talk about the incident, but then the code off your coat stand up by itself.

15:41 Anna

15:44 You just you know, keep doing keep doing the same thing over and over and over in her. Sometimes. It's amazing to yourself. You say to yourself. My mother always ask me. She say I can't you risk your life for somebody you don't know.

15:58 And I say I don't know.

16:05 So Michael became a member here at a different time.

16:14 It wasn't always easy. It wasn't easy for him to get in here. Was it? I don't think I talked about that or not. A lot of my friends either belong to the

16:30 It was either.

16:34 Where is it that the rescue squad fire department ramrods, or either Civil Air Patrol and and I would always

16:46 Reason why I got hooked in the fire department was because of

16:52 At least get your house was on fire and ran to the window and everything and I took and put that out and that was in a 65 and always we always like that then I live right down the street from the firehouse and always hurt if I was so going off and then I used to jump on my bike and go to the corner watch the fire trucks and another member was but you're around since he just passed away. He was he was a mailman and he was my

17:31 He was a mailman and I'm known to ramzan for since I was 11 years old.

17:37 We always kept kept in touch and you were trying to get me in the in the fire service and you got me in the class. When he Maryland City Fire Department was starting.

17:50 I got you the class and everything.

17:56 It was and we kept in touch.

17:59 And then when I went to the went to the post office he

18:05 You got me you got me hard and Laura still going to Annapolis.

18:10 Barre3, you know Kappa friendship form.

18:14 For me at 11 years old to 74 you have a man that that

18:32 You spend more time with Daniel unless your regular father.

18:35 I can say what movies football games.

18:41 Obama caught games together when we had tickets for my father have a Winnebago. We always used to get in the Winnebago by 20 of us get in there and and go to the game that we got tickets for the Ravens at you two games and stuff together and

19:02 It was another way that you are.

19:07 You have that much friendship for for those many years and

19:12 I mean for cold start at you you look at all the things that we lost in the last 3 weeks.

19:22 People that you were actually, you know close to

19:27 Close to you in every day and and you look at 20/20 was supposed to be our you know, the fire department's you know year cuz we plan for per our life members dinner and stuff like it and in the beginning of the year January.

19:48 This is totally been, you know a heartache on here. But as you can see every Saturday would try to complete every Saturday.

20:04 Relax, you know close to each other.

20:10 Hear any other people

20:17 Rick Ross with all the years we respond if you would

20:24 Count up all the years that all of us are here.

20:30 You almost have a thousand a thousand thousand years and now her sister brother. We reclaim together. We call each other.

20:50 Message on I have more fun coming here every Saturday.

20:56 Then anything I will not miss this for anything. Even if we

21:09 That we done, you know for a last-16 70th bill.

21:16 But six seven years that that we meet and we have no arguments.

21:24 Knock knock never have arguments never like yourself you see us when we were upstairs and everything. We talked about things we talked about.

21:47 Back in the day

21:49 Back in the deck you look at us and you look at us like a lot of us. Like we have a tape measure and reset. We're here. We're here. That's where we at now so we have the keys in the are sometimes there are some arguments it mention the name Trump Goes Bananas.

22:17 Jesse's is it's a good thing every Saturday morning.

22:23 We're coming have a coffee chat and chew and and then we know we tell each other have a nice weekend or or or things or when something happens. We check in with each other. We call you. No have a conversation. And like I said, I look forward to that.

22:45 Every every every every Saturday that's why I look I think you have some people that you know, regardless that

22:56 Travel 20 miles every Saturday morning to come come here. I mean you're getting out of bed and you and you come to talk every every Saturday morning and it's just like a lot of money and you already know you need that and and you just like neither a hard hard day at home or hard day at work or so, but when you come here on and Saturday morning, and and you do see see this because you have people

23:45 Before I did the did the same same thing and you had back in the in the sixties. We had a group that used to

23:55 Santa cross the firehouse every every night.

24:00 And we always wanted I was wondering if you know you always wanted to be that group that used to stand out there all the time because they were you know before I used to sit out there and talk.

24:15 Trump but they had a bond to they had they were together to

24:20 You know you look at y'all were saying when you were young will never be like that. But now we are that we are.

24:32 We are the Lost.

24:36 I-405 of that older group in the past 2 years

24:48 Talk about a medical test for getting all that stuff.
