This One Small Step conversation was recorded in Charlottesville, Virginia as part of the Sorensen Institute’s summer High School Leaders Program in 2023. Monique Emond (17) is from Warrenton and Isabel Lafrance-Melendez is from Henrico. Monique shares her passion for civil rights and liberty, which inspired her to be a politically active young citizen. Isabel talks about the importance of civil liberties, and what she learned about injustice when researching immigration detention centers. They both share their thoughts on going to college, and the challenges navigating personal preferences and “prestige”. They continue learning about each other, talking about their families, pop culture, and dream careers.
