Nicolas Newcomb (18) from Long Island, NY, and Matthew Farina (20) from Charlottesville, VA participated in this One Small Step conversation as part of their Public Service Pathways 1-credit UNST course at UVA. Nicolas shares about his upbringing in Colombia and Mexico before coming to America for high school, and describes the impact his family has had on his values. Matthew transferred from Elon University to UVA for his second year, and shares about experiencing UVA through new eyes as a locally raised student. Nicolas describes his transition from being devastated by President Trump’s election in 2016 to developing more conservative beliefs in subsequent years, diverging from many of his friends and family members. Matthew discusses going to a conservative leaning Catholic school, and how he would engage in conversations across ideological beliefs with peers as a left-leaning individual.
